First place to check for all things for the London Embassy is the US Embassy UK where you can find this answer.

If you have resided in the United Kingdom for 6 months or more since the age of 16, you are required to obtain a police certificate from the ACPO Criminal Records Office (ACRO).  Further information is available from their website at www.acro.police.uk.

Note: UK police certificates are valid for 12 months only.  Failure to present all necessary and valid police certificates at the time of the interview will incur significant delays to your application.

Second place is the UK sub-forum.

Am I right in saying that being from the UK I need to get a police certificate from ACRO? You asked the question and I provided the answer. Why post a question you already have an answer to?

I've seen there is a lot of talk about fingerprinting with certificates and as far as i am aware that doesn't happen with these. I will be interviewing at London Embassy

Yes, you need ACRO. I went to uni in Scotland, I wasn’t 100% if I needed ACRO or disclosure, so I called and was told it was definitely ACRO.
You do it online, all pretty much information you’d expect to be asked, they do ask for a photo to include on your certificate. It’s a pretty quick turnaround, I got mine delivered to Ireland within 2 weeks
