Hello have recently filed form I-407 to formally abandon my US green card.

This was sent almost a month ago, but I have had no confirmation from the embassy that processing is in place or acknowledging that they have it.

does anyone know roughly how long the process takes / how / if they make contact once processing is complete?

Im struggling to fine a definitive time frame anywhere on this!

thanks

Did you mail it to USCIS Eastern Forms Center?

"Individuals who wish to voluntarily record abandonment of their lawful permanent resident (LPR) status must submit Form I-407 via mail to: USCIS Eastern Forms Center" "In very rare circumstances, a U.S. embassy, U.S. consulate, or USCIS international field office may accept a Form I-407 in person if an individual needs immediate proof that they have abandoned LPR status." https://www.uscis.gov/news/alerts/uscis-will-no-longer-accept-i-407-international-field-offices

Hi guys

as of the change in July, we sent it off to the USCIS in Vermont. I did expect some kind of processing number or a letter but have received nothing as yet.

How long did it take for you to receive confirmation?

The best way to make sure you get a confirmation is to wait until the embassies reopen and do it in person.

Apparently since July 1st of 2019, it’s only by mail!

From the https://www.uscis.gov/i-407  where to file:

In very rare circumstances, a USCIS international field office or U.S. embassy or U.S. consulate without a USCIS international field office may allow you to submit a Form I-407 in person if you need immediate proof that you have abandoned your LPR status. The most common need for an expedited application is to apply for an A or G visa. You may also submit Form I-407 to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer at a U.S. port of entry.

I don’t think the IR1 would be one of the reason but I emailed the embassy to know if it’s possible to do that. But also I don’t have my green card, I received it in the US while being oversea, so I’m not sure they’ll accept my form

Wait until they reopen - the folks that are answering emails aren't always the most knowledgeable and they are there for US Citizens support not immigration.

I think you are misunderstanding "most common" as "required".

A government employee is more likely to not want to do something they don't want to be bothered with.

Don't be in such rush -  You might want to see what happens with the HEROS ACT that congress is working on.  There are some immigration items in there that could apply to your case.

Next round (6th?) of COVID19 legislation going thru congress - currently 1800 pages 3 trillion dollars.  It is supposed to be voted on tonight or tomorrow.  Here is link to the 80 page synopsys.  Granted it is only a bill and hasn't gone to the senate yet and will get lots of charges.   One of our House Members here has been pushing for help on dealing with some of the family immigration issues.

They are talking about changing some of the immigration laws (probably temporarily).  Includes putting some timelines on "hold".
