Typically they are checking for any backgrounds/skills/associations that might raise red flags. Your engineering background probably triggered the need for more info. So US consulate Montreal requested for my passport, almost 5 weeks after refusing my visa. The status of my case still shows “Administrative Processing”

There isn't actually a list, no. At least not an official USCIS list or anything like that. Lots of info scattered about on here and on the internet though about which countries are typically more scrutinized.

Easily found via Google, but in general:  MENA, south Asian countries, SE Asian countries, African countries.
