Hello,

I recently moved to the US to be with my fiancé! I have all the letters from my car manufacturer and received my stamps from the border giving my car the "okay" to be brought into the united states. I was just wondering what I need to do first? get insurance? register? get my in-state license?  I just don't know what step to take first in this process.

Depends on the state

You will need a title.  You may also need proof from the bank (if its listed as a lein holder) that there are no liens on the vehicle. The DMV will take your foreign title as proof of ownership and issue you a State title AFTER you get it inspected.  You may also need to go to 'special' inspection station that knows how to check for US DOT safety features like glass, tires, emissions.. not your local mechanic.

One you have a title then register, insure, drive.

Just brought one in.

Step 1:  Insure it

Step 2: Get it state inspected

Step 3:  Navigate the registration rapids that generally involve a certified translation of the title, the shipping papers from the port, and proof that the vehicle meets DOT standards.

In our state the insurance and inspection are stapled to the application for title and registration.
