Just for the record - our attorney worked with us and ultimately filed the papers from his office. We received every notice at our home and our attorney received copies of the NOAs/ biometrics/ interview notices as well. Everytime the attorney's office received something, they would give me a call to let me know in case we didn't get our own copy.

Before engaging the attorney, make sure you're up front about your expectations.

I'm in San Francisco and we paid a flat fee for the entire process, including representation at the interview.

We also recieved everything at home directly from the USCIS after our Lawyer submitted, and mailed all the paper work to the USCIS.

When you hire a lawyer to do your AOS and he fills out the bottom of the forms which indicate he prepared them, does USCIS send correspondence and RFEs to him or to us?

I would much rather prefer that all correspondence come directly to us.

PS. Our lawyer's paralegal isn't as diligent as we would like her to be.

8 CFR PART 103 -- POWERS AND DUTIES, USCIS website:

"Notification . An applicant or petitioner shall be sent a written decision on his or her application, petition, motion, or appeal. Where the applicant or petitioner has authorized representation pursuant to Sec. 103.2(a) , that representative shall also be notified. Documents produced after an approval notice is sent, such as an alien registration card, shall be mailed directly to the applicant or petitioner."

In my case with the 129F, we hired an immigration lawyer and he receives all notices, receipts etc (addressed to him) relevant to our case, as our representative, and individually my husband and I received notices too.

Our paralegal wasn't as diligent and efficient as she supersedes the law firm reputation and records. I asked our lawyer for a change of paralegals, twice, though they all don't care as much as we do about our case. And they have many clients too so I can't blame them. The paralegal even mistakenly gave my husband forms for adjustment of status to fill out and would not listen to us when we objected.

We were so new with the USCIS applications then and my husband wanted the paperwork off of us. We're too busy thinking and missing each other.

You only need a lawyer in a few specific instances..... If you just have a straightforward case its a big waste of time and money to use a lawyer....

My friend used a lawyer to file for the I-129f, and he charged him like $1200 or so, just for filling out a few forms and mailing them in! What a joke....

Filing forms for I-129 was something we could both do online together, and follow, what happens, so we had something to look forward, and common interests and suffer too. Although, question like that wasn't even disputable, its way to silly way to spend money on. Also I want control situation myself, lawyer wouldn't help me nothing from my side in my country regulations. But now, when we are here, we believe we are enough knowledgeable about things, and that its enough with VJ team.

When I had a lawyer during k-1 app process they sent to wrong service center, but when there was correspondence i recv'd copy and my attorney sent me a copy incase i didn't get from uscis. I asked for all originals when I fired her, before k-1 approval, and I did AOS app all by meself.
