Advanced parole questions

Hey everyone out there.

I'm currently waiting for my AP which says, when I get it, I can only leave in emergency situations. But Im wanting to travel out for Christmas to visit family and I'm not sure if I'm allowed or not?

If it makes any difference I am yet to go to my AOS interview as well. Does that give me a green card that I can use to travel with?

You can travel for any reason.    If you filed for AP with the AOS packet it covers any travel.

Like above, an approved AP can be used for travel for any reason, not just a specific reason. Can be for vacation or whatever.

Who gave you this advice of it being strictly for emergency travel? Or was it your assumption?

That's what my lawyer put down so I wasnt sure what it exactly meant. 

What kind of papers would I need to get back in?

Here is an excerpt from it:

• For an advance parole document for individuals who are currently in the United States:
  • A copy of an official photo identity document
  • Two identical passport-style photographs of yourself taken within 30 days of the filing of this application
  • A copy of any document showing your current status in the United States 
  • Evidence that your trip is for educational, employment, or humanitarian purposes 
  • An explanation or other evidence showing the circumstances that warrant issuance of an advance parole document
  • If you are an applicant for adjustment of status, a copy of a USCIS receipt as evidence that you filed the adjustment application
  •  If you are traveling to Canada to apply for an immigrant visa, a copy of the U.S. consular appointment letter

• For advance parole for someone outside the United States (for urgent humanitarian reasons or significant public benefit):
  • A copy of a photo identity document for beneficiary, petitioner, and sponsor
  • A copy of the beneficiary’s passport identity page
  • A description of the urgent humanitarian or significant public benefit reason, including documentation of a need for expedited handling, and the length of time for which the beneficiary needs parole
  • A completed Form I-134 with appropriate documentation as described in the form instructions
  • A statement explaining why the beneficiary cannot obtain a U.S. visa (if applicable)
  • A statement explaining why the beneficiary cannot obtain a waiver of inadmissibility (if applicable)
  • A copy of any decision on immigrant/non-immigrant applications or petitions

I was out of the country for 3 months and did not encounter any problems getting back in. You will go to secondary inspection though. When I arrived in secondary inspection I was not asked any questions. The CBP agent went on the phone, called somewhere (i dont know where) to verify that my card was still valid and that AOS was not denied while I was out of the country. Good luck with your holiday travels.

@OneD you CAN stay out of the country for no more than 1 year. Some officers ask questions, others do not. Every person's experience would be different.
