Wendy's manager shot over chili sauce Tue May 29, 10:34 PM ET

A manager at a fast-food restaurant was shot several times in the arm early Tuesday trying to protect the chili sauce, authorities said.

A man in the Wendy's drive-through argued with an employee because he wanted more of the condiment, police said. The worker told the customer that restaurant policy prohibited a customer from getting more than three packets.

The man insisted on 10, reports said. The employee complied, but police said the customer wanted even more.

The manager came out to speak to the man, said Miami-Dade police spokesman Mary Walter. The customer then shot the manager, who was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

The customer fled in his vehicle with a female passenger, authorities said.

It's the managers own fault for not having his gun available to shoot back. This will teach him! :hehe:

Jesus christ; is a few packets of chili sauce worth getting shot over?

No! But in this case... Yes! This world is sometime a strange and dangerous place for no good reason. Just think if we lived in an uncontroled environment, how would we function? My guess would be worst than animals. Mad Max style or even worse... Hey, I would kick some royal tale over some mustard, but that's just me. Hehehehe!!!!

It's business. He needs to reduce loss. I understand. The person who is wrong is the shooter, not the manager. The article made it feel almost as if the manager is silly to protect the sauce. He did not know the guy had a gun to begin with.

Good point. Makes me grateful I don't work in the fast food industry tho.

Think you would be safer working in the abortion clinic ? or the gas station at 3am ? or a repo man in Miami ?

Well it is generally the manager’s job to deal with the difficult customers, because the rank and file staff aren’t allowed to make exceptions to the rules or exceed their authority (usually enough reason for disciplinary action or termination). I’m sure anyone who’s worked retail can relate.

Always like the way the body text of the story rarely matches up to the lead-in. According to the story the manager wasn’t shot trying to “protect the chilli sauce”, he was shot trying to deal with a difficult customer who was being unreasonable. No reason he would have expected to get shot over a few sachets of MSG-laden chilli sauce, or if he had known that a gun was involved that we wouldn’t have handled it differently.

I mean what’s the employee supposed to do in this situation:

“I want more sauce”

“I can only give you 3”

“I want 10”

“I’m not supposed to”

“Give it to me”

“OK here you go”

“Give me more”

There’s only so much you can do if you’re a grunt employee – get the manager. In fact, that’s exactly what they company wants you to do – and you can get punished for doing anything different.

Reminds me of this real-life comedy skit I saw once – where a guy goes into an upmarket italian restaurant where the waiters hand-grate the parmesan cheese over your food. When his food turns up, the customer didn’t say ‘when’, he was just doing it to see how long the waiter would continue to grate the cheese. Guy went through a whole block of parmesan, then went back to the kitchen for a plate of pre-grated. Only when the customer demanded more and the waiter arrived with yet another block of parmesan did he even think to (politely) say no. By that time there was a mountain of cheese on the plate, and the waiter had been grating it for over 10 minutes.
