It seems immigration is concerned with current income...but not current debt.......

"The US immigration process requires a great deal of knowledge, planning, time, patience, and a significant amount of money.  It is quite a journey!"

Senior Master Sergeant, US Air Force- Retired (after 20+ years)- Missile Systems Maintenance & Titan 2 ICBM Launch Crew Duty (200+ Alert tours)

Registered Nurse- Retired- I practiced in the areas of Labor & Delivery, Home Health, Adolescent Psych, & Adult Psych.

IT Professional- Retired- Web Site Design, Hardware Maintenance, Compound Pharmacy Software Trainer, On-site go live support, Database Manager, App Designer.

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

If they were interested in debt and credit scores then very few Americans would be eligible to petition

Nope! I have student loan debt and we were still approved with no problems. As long as you can prove the current income of the US citizen is 125% above the poverty line (and if not have a co-sponsor), you will be just fine :)

The more important issue about loans and debts, your complete financial situation really, is to tell the person you are in a serious relationship with all of the details.  Immigration process aside, one of the biggest reasons that relationships don't work out is financial problems, so sharing your personal financial situation with your boyfriend/girlfriend is very important.  Know everything about each other, especially financial details like income, loans/debt, and future plans for careers/education, cost of living, who will pay for what, etc.  This will be critical to a successful marriage in the long run.  Love doesn't pay the bills.  Good luck!
