I was given a 2nd SSN when I got my EAD

When I moved here on my K1 visa in November, when filing my AOS/EAD/AP documents I requested to get a Social security number card with the EAD. I wasn’t sure at that point whether I would be going to the office to get my SSN sooner or wait for the EAD. I remember reading that if you requested one on the form but you already had one, they would just send you a replacement card. I then decided I wanted to get it sooner so I could have an SSN for banking, insurance, taxes (filed jointly), etc, so went to the SSA shortly after we got married and got my card. However, I just received my EAD/AP card in the mail yesterday (yay!!) but I also received a new SSN card which has a new number. I had understood it that I would get a new card with the same number, but now I’m worried because it seems I have been issued a completely new card! Guessing it would be because I had my maiden name on my old one (they wouldn’t let me get it in my new last name even though we were already married when I got it) and this new card is in my new married name? Planning to go into the SSA office next week and get this sorted out, but just wondered if anyone has had this happen to them and have any insight?

You don't get a new number,  you simply change the name on your existing

YMMV

I can't share any experience but I'm curious of the outcome. Please keep us posted.

So for anyone who is interested, I was able to go to SSA today and get it sorted out! I was already married when I got my first ssn, but at the time the lady said I had to get it in my maiden name to match my visa (which was apparently incorrect, it should’ve been in my new name). So since my name didn’t match the existing card, it didn’t flag and tell them to issue a replacement rather than a new card, so I mistakenly got a whole new one. She ‘retired’ the new one so it’s no longer active and I will be issued a new card with my new name and the original number! It sucks that we had to wait 1.5 hours in the waiting room today but at least it was a pretty easy fix!

Thank you for reporting back. Be sure to use the first SSN in all that you do. Credit card applications, employment, loans etc. It's possible the second one will actually never show in your public records. It can get messy sometimes if you have two SSNs or if your SSN is close to someone else's and they mess up the numbers.

Indeed, thanks for reporting back.  Glad to hear that it was an easy fix.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).
