I see some airlines are now going after Boeing for compensation of lost flight time.  Wonder what happens if it is found to be pilot error?  As to more and more automated systems, I keep hearing that these will cause fewer issues if we make all cars automated.  I am not an aerodynamic expert, but if Boeing put out an airplane that is not airworthy, they should go down in flames.  I doubt that is the case though considering all the requirements they have to meet to get an airworthy certification.  The thing that amazes me with this latest crash is that Ethiopia is resisting allowing the FDR to be reviewed which may contain some very important information.  Accident investigations take a long time usually, and often times the FDR and FCR are not even available, but in this case they are and politics is keeping them from being analyzed.

They are not refusing to have the black boxes analyzed. They just do not want to send it to the US, they prefer Europe to do it.

What you like, and what you get, are two different things.  8K hours is a lot.  The minimum to be a CA in the US airlines is 2500 hours.  I once knew a CA who had over 3000 hours, but he had to wait until his 23rd birthday to fly in the left seat.

Dont mind me. I just realized I am old and grumpy

Just to confirm, the issues back in the '90s?

Yes.  Three pretty high profile issues ( two crashes and one near miss).  Kind of a moot point now though with the action announced.

Then send them to Europe.  Isn’t it the Ethiopian investigator’s call?

Oh okay. Yeah, they didn't realize the root cause until the near miss when that aircraft actually made it and they could inspect it.

It absolutely is. I am just pointing out they're not refusing to have them analyzed as you were claiming in your post.

So if we are to believe the Globe, it is all political.  I have seen a lot aircraft incident investigation stories that turn political.  Kind of sad, but you are right, they only refused to send them to the US for some reason, but this decision should have been made as soon as they were found.

And just out of curiosity... Is it just greedy scumbag Norweigan that is seeking compensation or are there other airlines?

Not sure if the Norwegians are greedy scumbags, but they are the first, expect more especially with the US action.

I don't blame them for making things political considering how things are. They've allowed both NTSB, Boeing and GE to be there and help them with the investigation and I am sure whichever European country Ethiopia will pick will share their info with the US so it will all be fine in the end.

I didn't mean that the Norwegians are greedy scumbags, I meant the airline Norweigan. If it weren't for the EU saying no more MAX they'd still be flying.

I agree

I disagree.  If there is an issue with the systems, this may well set back a discovery several months.  (Unless the Ethiopian FDR reveals something heretofore unknown, that is).

Flying the planes, and gathering more data, especially on the newer models, is needed to figure out what is going on.

Well, it may have been a good thing after all.  Evidently, they decided to ground our US fleet because:

as a result of the data-gathering process and new evidence collected at the site and analyzed today."

Hopefully they found something tangible that will allow the problem to be fixed.

Why risk passengers lives just to gather data? I am sure there are other methods they can use to figure out what is wrong.

Thousands of hours with no errors do not give a clue as to what is wrong.  They need evidence of what went wrong to fix it.  Nothing worse than trying to track down an intermittent electrical problem...
