Not true. He can fly domestically using an overseas passport. He needs government-issued ID, but it doesn’t have to be issued in this country. How do you think tourists take flights within this country?

Oh ok. So basically he can travel without having his greencard yet. .. i want to see him and spend time with him here in minnesota. Are the immigration as any question at the gate in michigan or sfo?

They have passport and visa in their passports too.

When I have immigrants to USA I have been told that I will need status issued id to book a ticket or go some where never been told to show my passport but you are right tourists might show the passport with visa ,

Then you have been given incorrect information. A state-issued ID is NOT required to fly domestically. I previously flew from Las Vegas to Seattle showing only my UK drivers license. That was before I lived here. You need to show “government-issued ID” but it can be from any government, here or overseas. Even green card holders don’t need to show their GC or state ID to fly domestically. They can show their overseas passport, if they wish. The presence or absence of a visa is irrelevant. On a domestic flight you will not come into contact with border patrol.
