Passport renewal & Report of Marriage

Hi All!

My wife is looking to renew her passport. She is not using my surname. My wife is still using her original last name. Will she still require a Report of Marriage authenticated by PSA?

If we require a ROM, we were married in the United States (South Carolina). Would we be able process the ROM at the San Francisco consulate, even if South carolina is outside of SF jurisdiction?

How long does it take to process the ROM and passport? We're hoping to have a renewed passport by Holy week next year (April 2019). Thanks!

ROM is not needed to renew the passport in the old name.

ROM must be filed in the jurisdiction of the embassy/consulate where the marriage occurred (even if that's not not a current residence).

If you send the ROM by mail, expect a couple/few weeks. If done in person, it's same day I believe.

I'll defer to others on passport processing timelines.

Ok, you have a couple of things going on here that I will help you out with:

Your asawa can renew her passport in her maiden name with no issues whatsoever without having to do ROM.

If you want to do the ROM then you will have to go through the US Embassy in Washington DC even though you are in California right now I take it. This happened to my wife and I as well since we got married in NC and then moved out to Los Angeles at the time. So we had to mail the ROM paperwork to the US Embassy in DC. The SF Consulate WILL NOT touch it at all unfortunately.

If you send the ROM paperwork now then you will get it back within 4-6 weeks at best. Then you can take that paperwork to the Consulate in SF. If you hurry up then you might it have it back by then.

Ist is not required to complete ROM with the Philippines.    Only if she wants to use her married name with official documents in the Philippines is ROM needed.

She can renew your passport in her maiden name without issue.

Thanks everyone for the info! Sounds like the consensus is that we should be ok without the ROM for passport renewal. What benefits are there to processing the ROM in the future?

She can get a passport in the married name and the registration of birth.

Minimal .. passport in married name is about it.   Oh, and if you have a child the consulate will want ROM to have been completed before filing ROB

You don't submit your original marriage certificate, you  would get certified copies from the county where you recorded your marriage.

Why not just mail the forms, you won't save any time by going there in person, the forms still have to be sent to PSA in the Philippines .. then a stamped copy is returned to you.  Takes about 6-8 weeks

we didnt get a certified copy just an original ..maybe we could still request for that from our county?

And yea im thinking to just send it via mail ..i want to renew my passport too into my married name(passport will expired 2020)but i found out i need the ROM so i guess it is not really worth it to go to Washington for ROM.

Thanks Hank

Yes you have to request the certified copies.
