Can anyone point me in the right direction and inform me what is required for my wife to get her driver's license/permit.  She came to the USA on a K-1 Visa from the Philippines and we got married last month.  We live in South Carolina.  We are not sure if she needs to start off with a Beginner's permit or if she can get a drivers license.  My wife has never drove before so this is new to her.  We are not sure what documentation we may need for her to get her license and which one she needs to apply for.

August 7, 2022: Wife filed N-400 Online under 5 year rule.

November 10, 2022: Received "Interview is scheduled" letter.

December 12, 2022:  Received email from Dallas office informing me (spouse) to be there for combo interview.

December 14, 2022: Combo Interview for I-751 and N-400 Conducted.

January 26, 2023: Wife's Oath Ceremony completed at the Plano Event Center, Plano, Texas!!!😁

February 6, 2023: Wife's Passport Application submitted in Dallas, Texas.

March 21, 2023:   Wife's Passport Delivered!!!!

May 15, 2023 (about):  Naturalization Certificate returned from Passport agency!!

 

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

I can access both fine.....might be an issue on a server between you and the sites.  I would try again later.

South Carolina isn't great for immigrant driver's licenses.  She'll need to wait until she has the SSN at the very least, which she'll presumably get together with EAD.  Otherwise, along with the SSN, she will need to show the DMV:

 

- proof of residence in SC - e.g. a utility bill or a bank statement sent to the SC address with her name on it

- proof of ID - this can be a passport

- proof of authorized length of stay - this will be on the EAD card.  Since she doesn't have a current work visa (with length of approved stay), the EAD card is the only real option.  Her current visa doesn't "authorize" a stay that SCDMV accepts as valid, because SCDMV is weirdly strict about this stuff.

 

Also keep in mind that there is a handful of DMV locations you can go to if you're not a citizen (including permanent residents--only US citizens can go to any DMV).  In Charleston, it's just the one on Leeds Ave, and one in Goose Creek.

 

Then they'll give her a paper saying that she can drive, and send her documentation to Columbia, who will approve it and send you the DL to your address.
