We applied for my husbands SS number with the ds-260, but like many others, we have not received it. We waited 3 weeks & then went to the social security office. They didn't see him in the system & told us to wait one more week & then come back. We'll be going back this Thursday. My question is...will they be able to give him the number that day...or do we have to wait for it to come in the mail?

Thread is moved from the Moving to the US forum to the Social Security Numbers subforum.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

This happened to my wife. Potentially the hold up is a response from USCIS to verify your husband's immigration status. You can check to see if SSA submitted a request for your husband. https://www.uscis.gov/save/casecheck

The link is not working for me. I read that there's no way to track it online...that you have to call or visit the office. I guess we'll wait until Thursday. I just wanted to know if we could get the number if it's created at the office...or do we have to wait until the card comes in the mail. My husband has a job interview soon, so it would be nice if he at least has the number in case they ask.

not sure why that link didn't work. But try this:

1. Go to https://www.uscis.gov/save

2. then scroll to the bottom until you see "Save Case Check Have an Open Case?"  -Click on that

3. It will take to you to this lonk https://www.uscis.gov/save/casecheck

4. scroll down till you see "Check Your Case"

5. Read the Privacy Act Smt and click the check box to agree, then click on next

6. complete the 3 questions and then submit.

I captured some screenshots for you so you can see what I'm talking about.

When you go to the office, once they have verified your husband's status they will issue you confirmation letter which will have his ssn but not the actual card. Card will be mailed.

I arrived in the US a week ago and yesterday I went to the local security office and asked if I had been assigned a social security number. The guy at the office checked the computer and nothing showed up for me so he gave me a form to fill in then he went off to enter it into the computer.

He then came back and asked to swear that the information I gave was truthful then he gave me a letter stating that a social security number had been applied for and he said I would receive it within a week.

No point waiting best to take matters in to your own hands and follow it up.

Thank you for that info. I was trying to tell this woman that we've waited 3 weeks & know it's not coming...but she insisted that we wait another week, very frustrating! We'll go tomorrow & get this done!

When I walked into the office there were application forms for social security numbers on the guards desk. If you feel the office is going to be difficult why not have a form filled out before you get called to the window. It's very basic information, name date of birth, place of birth and parents names, also what's the immigration status of the applicant, make sure to bring their passport with the visa in it.
