Never updated my naturalization status with SSA. Will it be an issue for a new I-9 form?

Hi,

I so I am a naturalized citizen, but I never got around to notifying the Social Security Administration of my updated status. I am applying for a new job this week. If I get it and have to fill out a new I-9 form (first one since naturalization where I will check "Citizen" instead of "Lawful Permanent Resident") will it be an issue? I will provide my U.S. Passport as proof of identity. Also, I check the e-Verify site with both my SS number and passport number and all is well. I just don't want anything to go wrong.

You are a USC now so that does not matter at all.

It doesn't matter.

Wouldn't it be strange if DHS and SSA have different data? I'm considering taking a half-day at work today to go to my local SS office to get it changed, but if I don't need to I won't.

I can't give you legal advice, but I wouldn't worry about this at all, much less rearrange my schedule around it.  You can produce the documents required for the I-9; if the employer needs anything else they'll tell you.

Go to the ssa office and just do the update.

When i got a job after my naturalization, my employer had to verify my citizenship because my data was different,  its just a little hassle for the employers, nothing major,  but if you have the time, just update it with ssa

  • No, it will not be an issue.  Thing might be different in term of noticing the SSA as I never did when I became USC (maybe my employer did it?).
  • My employer only asked to provide passport to update my status in their payroll/HR system
