Hello VJers, my wife is wanting to sponsor her sister, who is 18, to come to the USA. I've been researching and came across a possible issue of having to wait to 10 years before approval? Is that correct? Or does that only pertains to the countries listed at the top of the travel.state. document; such as, China, India, Pakistan, etc. Asking cause if that is the case it would be more reasonable for us to sponsor her mother, my MIL, who is a F1. Thanks in advance!!!

Is your wife a citizen or a LPR?  A parent is never an F category, a parent is an immediate relative of a citizen or nothing.

and yes sibling wait is actually more like 14 years, longer for the countries you mentioned (Philippines not Pakistan by the way) but again only a citizen can sponsor.

Ten years if lucky...more likely 15-25 years since the visa bulletin does not advance a year every year (historically it's about 8 months every year).

F1 would be faster...ETA: ~7-10 years, but F1 is for an unmarried adult son/daughter of a USC.

Parents can only be petitioned by a USC son/daughter. ETA: ~12-16 months

It will take about 7 years to sponsor the daughter, after the mother would get a greed card. And a daughter would need to stay unmarried during that time.

Mother's process would be about a year.

So either way, it's going to be a looooooong process.

Read my post.

Parents - about 12 months.

Siblings - 15 years or so.

If green card holder parents sponsor child - 7 to 10 years.

Ok, it was confusing because you posted in the forum about bringing family of permanent residents.

as per answers above, about a year for the parent and then about 7 years or longer for her over 21 unmarried daughter, who must remain unmarried as long as mother only LPR. If mother becomes citizen daughter can then marry but will also then move to F3, which is almost as long as the sibling wait.

basically the sister is not going to get here in the next at least 8 years on a family basis.

Re category,, if sister is now 18 (how many months older may matter), will be 19 plus presumably some months when mother comes over, F2A currently has a 2 year wait, unlikely process will be complete before she’s 21 and then she ages out to F2B. There is no F1 category in the scenario you’ve outlined.
