OP came looking for how much she can get from the taxpayers.  She also was more concerned about the amenities at a shelter than her safety. She is also from a country with more than a little marriage for a green card fraud through marriage brokers. Her motives are suspect.

It wasn't me who asked about amenities at a shelter.  Someone else asked in my topic.

My personal situation wasn't bad enough to run to the shelter (no physical violence except few episodes long ago, mostly psychological, but over the time I just grew a thick skin). Even if I needed to leave, I could just stay at friend's but she can't afford to buy me food, pay for my phone and such. Currently, my husband buys me food in exchange for me working instead of him. But he threatens to kick me out of the house every now and then. I am planning to leave him as soon as my work permit arrives, but in case he really kicks me out,  I was trying to find out what are my other options before my EAD  (waiting since last October) because even if I went to shelter, I highly doubt they would be able to support me for such a long time.

And trust me, I'd rather work three jobs than live on welfare. But sometimes, it can be the only option.  Don't be so quick to judge before you know someone's situation.

Please do not make accusatory statements that someone is making false claims for benefits. (check the TOS for VJ) Also someone being afraid or apprehensive  of going to a shelter does not automatically mean they are not being abused.

You did pretty much the same thing in one of my threads (making an accusatory statement about a restraining order, "Once again it seems you dont want to fight it because you are guilty.") However, because I'm an easygoing guy I didn't report the post even though it may have violated the ToS by inhibiting my use and enjoyment of the site.

Anyway, "abuse" is a vague catchall that can mean anything, especially when we're talking about psychological abuse, which mostly boils down to feeling unhaaaaaaaaaaaaappy enough with the situation to want to leave one's husband and go make use of services for abused women. Given that the system is wide open for plausibly deniable exploitation, chiding people for doing so is unlikely to deter them.

OP, by prima facie, are you talking about the I-360? My experience with DSS is that they're pretty bureaucratic and don't really care about emotional displays. They'll hand out food stamps if you meet the criteria. Supposedly, battered spouses with petitions pending can get SNAP benefits.

My mom is director of a shelter for battered women, and says that claiming psychological abuse won't cut it; you have to claim that your life is in danger before they'll let you stay there.

Okay so its been pointed out the OP was not the one asking about amenities. Even so we all need to be careful on how we address potential trolls or scammers. Here is the most recent post from Tbone on it-

@lysander Please stop trying to engage me into bickering with you. I am not interested. If you see something I posted that you find offensive report it.  Do not bring drama or whatever issues you are having with me into other threads- and especially not in a VAWA victims thread. You can also block me so you wont see my content which is what I am going to have to end up doing to you. Have a nice day :)
