Now Catalina Island is is burning! A 600+ acre started in the centre of the island earlier today, and moved toward the town of Avalon. Many people have evacuated to the mainland. I could see a huge plume of smoke while driving up Pacific Coast Hwy this evening

This sucks! I was planning a trip there in a few months with my fiancee' and kids. It's going to take a while now before it's not so blackened from the fire

On the other coast (FL) we've got a haze of smoke in the Tampa Bay Area again. It's really bad today. Is it ironic that I'm looking forward to going to Manila for some air quality relief?

I saw the smoke from the Washington Pier near Venice Beach last night - it will be a long hot summer indeed, even the grassy knoll by the beach is completely parched.

Very sad to think of all the humans and creatures affected by this.

The island, always drought-ridden, is in especially bad shape this year, having received only about 2 inches of rain since January.

I grew up on the mainland, seeing the Island every single day - and spending some time during many summers working at summer camps there. It's one of my favorite places in the whole wide world and watching the coverage last night made me ill and broke my heart.

The blaze came within about 100 yards of the town of Avalon last night, one home in another cove has burned, along with some out buildings. Very, very fortunately, the winds that turned the 40 acre fire into a 4000 acre fire are to be replaced today with a cooling marine layer and increased humidity - a godsend for the imported fire fighters. They had to bring extra equipment over last night with hover craft borrowed from the marine at Camp Pendelton.

I pray for the best. The ecology on the Island is beautiful but always threatened and the history of the settled ares of the island would be heartbreaking to lose.

Not all, i dont think Charles and i can use much more, its rained everyday this week as much as 2in a hour, but then again that may be the last we see all summer
