The advice I've seen in these situations is simply to file as soon as possible if you miss the deadline. It might cause some extra scrutiny. Note, you don't go out of status if you file late.

You MUST send an explanation about why you filed late. It's up to USCIS' discretion to accept the late filing. I believe most of the time they do accept it. Especially as it's less than 2 months late, you should not have a problem.

Thank you I just added this to the cover letter.

Yep - already have. In my office that takes about 14 months or so. Just be aware that if you do, your I751 won't be processed until your N400 - it drags the whole process out a bit.

Oh interesting. I thought it would force them to finish the I751. At least there's an end in sight...

It happens, this is life. Just file it as soon as possible with the cover letter explaining the situation that prevented you from filing late. People have reported filing late and their applications were accepted. I am pretty positive they will accept your application, best wishes.
