Something

If you belive its not about the dreadlocks and all about where you come from you need a boot in the #######.

I am so ###### sick of people pulling the race card every time something doesnt go their way, it may well be its not about your race, but the way you present yourself. But that not easy for some people to accept.

Wow! Quite angry there aren't ya? I dont think anyone has pulled the race card when talking about dreads, we are talking hair here right? Jeesh, so touchy.

Oh wow, this was straight up discrimination! I don't know what you look like, but I see your little avatar, and if that is you, then I think you were discriminated because you were white and with dreads. They sent you through most of the interview process because they were sure what to do with you. I don't think they would have said that if you were Black with dreads. Did you see this policy in writing? Dreads are a "natural" process and state for Black hair, so they couldnt tell you to not wear your hair natural....racial discrimination would come into place here. The fact that you are white and have to manipulate your hair to dread (more so than a Black person), they probably felt the need to let you know they basically just dont like dreads. Now if you are not White, then I could be completely wrong...lol! But I definitely think that was discrimination.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA..... That is one of the most ridiculous arguments I've read in a long time. If I was to appear at a job interview in my natural state, I'd most certainly not be considered for the job. That ain't discrimination, though. It's commonly referred to as professional appearance - or lack thereof.

You probably do go to work in your "natural" state. Does your hair grow out of your head straight, curly, wavy, kinky, or what ever else? Well mine doesnt grow out of my head straight, it grows out of my head a knotted state that allows it to dread naturally. Dreads are beautiful. Yes there are some that are "less kept up" but there are many that are! If I didnt dread my hair, I'd have to pluck it out and it would be an afro....again a natural state. If I didnt pluck it out I can opt to twist it....dreads....or braid it.....ALL NATURAL STATES.

I think its unfortunate that people dont realize that dreads arent offensive its just the way we are born. When you see a Black person with straight hair thats unnatural. There's nothing wrong with it, but its not easy to get it that way. You either have to chemically alter your natural hair or fry it with EXTREME heat which in term makes your hair fall out. All this cause society wont allow you to be you. Its not a race thing at all, its just that in all fairness Black people are really the only people who have this "hair" dilemma.

Yes corporations can have their rules and regulations, but I guarantee that a person could win a discrimenatory case if they sited the above facts. No you shouldnt go to work looking like "who shot who", but you should be allowed to go looking like you.

Relax Gupt.

This isn't about my work ethic - I was just surprised when the recruiter told me he couldn't hire me because of my dreads.

Exactly! No ones talking about your stupid clothes and dress codes, or your work ethic. Get with it people.

Never seen a baby with dreds..... so no you are not born that way and you choose to let your hair go that way... Yes I have seen people with very neat and tidy short dreds but I have seen many more with long matted dirty looking dreds.... I dont like the dress code that my employer has but if I want to work there then I comply....

No, I don't. A fair amount of work goes into altering my natural state to the point where my appearance is such that it is acceptable to my employer. Or do you actually believe that people are born with the clean hair cuts, for example, that you see all over the place?

I wanted to see what you all think about this...

I'm a middle school teacher living near Orlando - a few miles away from Disney.

School ends in 2 weeks and I was thinking about a part time job - maybe something different - so I tried Disney's Job Fair.

Honestly I don't want to work there but it's close and they need seasonal workers (so I can quit no problem when I go back to school in the fall).

I went through this whole line of people, applied for a job, waited in 2 rooms, then went to see a recruiter to see if there was a part time job for me.

All this time I'm thinking I didn't really want to do this (I have an interview at Berlitz at the end of the month :)

Anyway, I was told by the man interviewing me - after about 5 minutes of me waiting for me clicking on the computer and then asking me "interview" questions - that Disney will not hire people with dreadlocks.

Does this seem wrong to anyone else?

Now I know they have a bunch of dumb rules, only small earrings, no mustaches, short hair only for me, no necklaces, one ring her hand, etc...

but still.

whats your point? dreads is not the disney image.

when you wear uniforms - its just that uniform.

its like in my job, I have to have no nose ring < mine is small like glitter >

I can only have one ring and one set of studs in my ears.

so in order to make life happier for me.. I use alternatives.

like use straw in my nose to keep the hole open. its not noticeable. :)

in your case buy a wig. its no diffrent than a long hair man ..forced to cut his hair

so what he does is buy a simple wig and go to a salon for it styled.

if you want a decent job then make adjustments.

I mean, I'm a bit relieved because I really shouldn't be working as a slave. What Disney expects of you sucks (hours of availability, etc), but it's the reason why I couldn't be hired.

What if I had needed/wanted the job?

Then you would have either had to cut your locks or find another job.

Seems to me you're overthinking it...you dismiss some rules as 'silly' like no mustaches, but yours is 'discrimination'?

no its like the military, law enforcement, airlines. you have uniform standards.

if you want that job, you have to follow the rules. and leave your " dreads " outside the office doors. really they are not that professional.

I had braids when i was a ticket agent. they made me take them out. ok. no problem. I ended up getting a behind the scenes airline job. that afford me to keep my braids. now my hair is too long

so i dont fuss with braids at all.

The January before my brother was due to graduate from college, he started letting his hair grow back...he shaved his head except for a stripe at the top which he left long and pulled into a ponytail, and he used to shave pictures and words into his head. By the time he graduated he had completely average hair, which he knew he'd have to have in order to get a job in the white collar world.

That's just the way things are. *shrug*

When you show up to an interview for a job, NO MATTER WHAT JOB OR COMPANY, the first thing that stands out is your appearence. And judged on THAT alone, you can be denied a position. They dont have to tell you to fix your hair, they will just deny you a job.

Appearence is the most important part of the job at disney, i mean cmon it is the biggest attraction in the world. They want their ppl looking clean and neat. The only one allowed with dreads at disney is the guy who plays the part of Capt Jack Sparrow, AND THAT IS HIS UNIFORM.

as far as discrimination, pfffttttt, thats just the easy way out of feeling rejection.

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Not only do have to learn how to quote another poster on this board (I fixed this one for you), you also have a lot of catching up to when it comes to grasping the actual point that another poster made. ;)
