Bush nearly places Queen Elizabeth in 18th century

Mon May 7, 2:42 PM , President George W. Bush, no stranger to the occasional verbal misstep, nearly placed Queen Elizabeth II in the 18th century on Monday in welcoming her to the White House on a state visit. Britain's queen and Prince Philip were treated to a formal arrival ceremony on the White House South Lawn, complete with a marching fife-and-drum corps.

Trumpets heralded the arrival of the dignitaries. The U.S. Air Force Band played national anthems before 7,000 invited guests on a sunny spring day.

Both Bush and the queen addressed the crowd as the royal couple approached the end of a six-day U.S. visit that included ceremonies marking the 400th anniversary of the British settlement in Jamestown, Virginia, and the Kentucky Derby.

Bush noted the queen's long history of dealing with successive American governments, just barely stopping himself before dating her to 1776, the year the 13 British colonies declared their independence from Britain.

Elizabeth has occupied the British throne for 55 years and is 81.

"The American people are proud to welcome your majesty back to the United States, a nation you've come to know very well. After all you've dined with 10 U.S. presidents. You've helped our nation celebrate its bicentennial in 17 -- in 1976," Bush said.

Bush looked at the queen sheepishly. She peered back at him from beneath her black and white hat.

"She gave me a look that only a mother could give a child," Bush said as the crowd burst into laughter.

i was watching it. the queen did not look amused. also, her speech was completely different from bush (who can't go through just one speech without saying 'extremists' or 'terrorists'

It was pretty obvious to me that the Queen was having a hard time hiding her disgust at having to share a dias with George W. Bush. I agree with her, but it's not her place to have opinions.

She is one remarkable Lady! But has any other Brit got a little peeved that 90% of the American media refer to her as Queen Elizabeth !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Queen Elizabeth died in 1603, was born in 1533 and was the daughter of Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII. The current visiting monarch is Queen Elizabeth II (you don't actually become I until II succeeds lol) I know it's just a minor detail but it bugs the hell out of me everytime I hear them call her Queen Elizabeth (yes I know get a life!)

Apparently when George Sr was president, Babs didn't want George Jr sitting next to the queen during a state dinner because she as afraid he might say something stupid. Now we know why.

Good point! I never noticed it really.. the difference and it DOES obviously make a difference.. and she IS a classy lady.. I'm surprised she even let it show.. I'm a big fan (realize that's the not "popular" thing), but I think the woman has lived a life worthy of respect IMO.
