I'm pretty sure there aren't many Indians left who consider throwing oneself on a husband's burning body to be acceptable.

Unfortunately, its still acceptable in some areas to burn your new wife alive if the dowry is too small. In some cases the woman gets the gas can + lights the match herself :(

Your absence runs through me like a needle

Wouldn't it be more physical cruelty than mental cruelty? (I mean, I know we say that men think with their little heads too much, but that's a *metaphor*....)

:P

What about the ladies? For us if our partner withholds it makes us question ourselves and our attractiveness and everything else about ourselves, especially because of the stereotype that all men will hump anything that makes an offer. Basically we are told that if our guy doesn't want to have sex with us, there's something wrong with US. In that case, I'd go with mental cruelty... who knows, maybe the men of India think like women? ;)

FFFs, I'd just assume he turned gay

This isn't just an Indian thing it is the same in the UK a friend divorced several years ago and when specifying the acts of mental cruelty against her withholding sex was one of the several things she specified in the divorce papers.

(which thinking about it makes it quite a strange situation as you can't demand it (marital rape) but obviously can't deny it either ......... oh what a strange world)

Studying law a few years ago, that was something I learned about some states here. It is a very valid reason for divorce...I don't remember which states it was, but it is a fact. Also, if a man becomes impotent during the marriage, that too is grounds for divorce.....I forget what they class the reason as, I don't think that they class it as mental cruelty...I will get back with the answer...

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).
