Hi guys, I'm from the Bay Area and I have decided to apply for N400. Do you know how long it will take approximately to get an interview for the SF local office. I heard that the estimated times on the USCIS website are not too accurate. I would appreciate an answer :) thank you.

It takes about one year right now. That was pretty much what they had estimated for me on the website, and it turned out to be quite accurate.

My wife and I attended our interview on 8/14. Immigration officers were extremely friendly. They apologized for the technical difficulties that caused delay. They informed our cases are being approved and they would put in a note to make sure our oath ceremony gets scheduled on the same day.

We both got a status update for case approval the next day. My wife got oath scheduled on 8/20 for 9/18. However, my case is still stuck in you are in queue for scheduling oath ceremony. Has anyone here had a similar experience (waiting for over 2 weeks for scheduling oath ceremony)? Also any luck in getting more info from customer service than just reading the status update?

Hey Guys, Quick question. My wife and I are scheduled for interview on 3rd September early in the morning. We have a 6 yr old we cannot drop at school before the interview because it would be too early and I live about an hour's drive away from SF. Can we bring the kid to the interview? Anyone with similar issue, how did you deal with it?

Also what is the ideal parking lot for the SF interview?

It was a pretty quick 20 minute interview. I had applied based on work category and I only took originals of documents specifically listed in the letter (letter, passport, greencard, attachments to N400). I did get a transcript of my last income tax but that did not come up. I had some DMV tickets that I had not mentioned in the application and the IO noted it down. I was asked :
+ What is the name of the national anthem?
+ Who was President during World War I?
+ Where is the Statue of Liberty?
+ Who is the "Father of Our Country"
+ What major event happened on September 11, 2001, in the United States?
+ The House of Representatives has how many voting members?

It took 2 days to get approval email, and when Oath was scheduled it took another 2 days for oath letter to show up in the documents tab. My oath is 9/24.

All the best for your interview.

We were able to take our infant with us and a friend to watch him when we were being interviewed. They will likely allow you to take your child with you to the interview as well. We chose not to as it will be hard to console him if he starts crying.

There is a lot right opposite to the building on Sansome. It's a bit pricey but convenient. If you are lucky you might find some street parking around the block. All the best!

Thanks @init18 for the info. Much appreciated!

One more question. After I submitted my application last year, I got a parking ticket. I intend to mention it during the interview but was wondering what impact it could have on the approval process. If it helps, the ticket was $33.

In addition to the tests, I was only asked to verify the info in the application and any travel after I filed application. Not sure if you need to bring this up unless asked.

My spouse and I had our citizenship interviews (employment based) on Aug 27 and want to share my experience.

Our appointments were at 1:20 p.m. We got off at Embarcadero Station and took an Uber to 444 Washington Street. When we reached it was 12:40 pm. There were about 15- 20 people in line and those with 12:45 pm appointments were being taken in. After we were let in, there was a security check. They will ask you to take your shoes, jewelry, belt off and your bags will be scanned like an airport security. We headed to the 2nd floor to check-in and there was a long line there too. By the time we checked in, it was 1:30 pm. They took fingerprints of right and left index fingers and a picture. My appointment letter was stamped and was given a package with passport application details. The friendly lady at the check-in counter wished me good luck and asked to go the 3rd floor waiting area. My spouse was asked to wait at the 2nd floor for the interview. I probably waited for 15 - 20 minutes before the I/O came out and called my name.

She didn’t smile and looked intimidating. Especially more in comparison to the other I/Os who I had noticed were so friendly.

After taking the oath, she asked for my driver’s license, green card and passport. We started with the civics test, followed by reading and writing

  • What did the Emancipation Proclamation do?
  • What did Martin Luther King do?
  • Who is the Speaker of the House?
  • Name one state that borders Mexico
  • Who signs bills to become laws?
  • Why are there 13 stripes on the flag?
  •

I got all 6 correct so she said "Congratulations you passed the Civics test"

Reading: Who can vote?

Writing on tablet with finger: Citizens can vote.

Then we started with the regular questions:

Country of birth?

Are any of your parents US Citizens?

How did you get your green card?

Who do you work for?

What is your address? Who else lives there with you?

Marital status? Date of marriage? How many children?

Any visits outside the US in the past year and their dates.

Part of any groups?

Have you ever failed to file taxes?

Went over all the YES / NO questions. She was going over the yes / no questions very fast, so I really had to listen very carefully. Almost seemed in a rush to wrap up.

I had taken tax transcripts for past 5 years and also our marriage certificate but she didn’t ask for them.

After updating the info in her system, she asked me to check if all information was correct and sign (on the tablet and you can scroll down to see all the info). She printed the result and said I am recommending you for approval. Lastly, she asked me if I had any questions for her and finally cracked a smile as she escorted me back.My spouse and I left the building at 2:10 pm. Overall both our interviews were very straightforward and quick.

This morning our accounts were updated and we were able to see that our oath ceremony is scheduled on Sept 24.
