Larry Nassar gets another 40 to 125 years in sex abuse case

Former gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar was sentenced Monday to another 40 to 125 years in prison by a Michigan judge who said she didn't believe his claim of remorse.

 

But Judge Janice Cunningham revealed that just days before, during a jailhouse pre-sentencing interview, Nassar claimed that when he pleaded guilty and admitted his invasive bare-handed pelvic procedures had no legitimate purpose that was a lie.

"I am not convinced that you truly understand that what you did was wrong and the devastating impact that you have had on the victims, families and friends," the judge said. "Clearly you are in denial, you don't get it, and I do not believe there is a likelihood you could be reformed."

Can't they just make it "life without parole"? Why do we need to add on absurd numbers of years to a prison sentence? Is there a legal reason?

Perhaps there's some loophole in the "without parole" part that would enable parole regardless.

The longer the years in the sentence, perhaps the longer it must be before someone can be granted parole.

Maven or another lawyer will have to clarify all this.

My guess is the "without parole" designation is reserved for particular crimes and, as heinous as this is, it may not qualify. So instead they just give him a few centuries in prison to mull it over.

My view, child molestation is a crime that carries a max sentence. Multiple counts of same crime does not yield to a life sentence or death penalty but multiples of that max sentence term. You usually hear these absurd length sentences in white-collar crimes, i.e. business fraud, tax evasion, bribery, etc.

I'd say prison for life, in the right circumstance, is a worse punishment.

Because the sentencing guideline for that statue, do not allow that option

I’ve wondered that myself.  Seems excessive, but maybe there is something psychological relative to closure for the victims in hearing the large number of years.

That may be the case.  I don’t remember hearing that he had ever actually raped anyone, so it might be a result of the multiple victims, and multiple charges.
