So my family has a rather unique situation right now.

I am currently active duty in the military and deployed. My wife arrived in the US in 2015 on a k-1 visa after about a year of waiting. We have two children together and we also have a step son. However, our step son is still living in and a citizen of the Philippines. He is 10 years old. We are ready to start his U.S. Citizen Petition for an Immediate Relative. My wife will be traveling to the Philippines, gathering the necessary documents, and starting his visa journey. Shortly after my return from the deployment, we are moving duty stations. Is there any way to get him a social security number before he gets to the US? or at least enroll him in DEERS? Would it be possible to expedite his Visa so he can start school on time in the fall?

We are also planning to bring my wifes mother to the US on a tourist visa for as long as possible once my stepson can travel to the US. Once my wife gains citizenship, she will petition for her to come permanently. Is this our only option until my wife is a US citizen in 3 years?

I agree , I’m sorry. But when we updated deers they needled her passport & her visa & birth certificate, later when we updated again they asked for her social security card which we could get after she had a ead/ap card , we couldn’t get ssn for my daughter with her unexpired k2 visa only for me at that time. But once we got ead/ap cards it worked. I still don’t know why I think because it’s stepchild.with green cards it’s even easier, just show the green card & you get it.also you are military so you can get expedited & I think there is also a priority lockbox but I think you have to pay more , I saw something like this on my recent notifications on the background it’s worth a call to try & see ,It’s called form I-907 & it’s called premium processing service . I never used it so I can’t tell you nothing more about it but you can try , good luck!

I seem to remember illegal spouses being added to DEERS, they would not have a SSN usually.

Yea I only heard about it never actually knew or met one. So it’s like in the end they can do whatever, I am also wondering how spouses & their kids get on deers when the sponsors assigned to overseas base which is the spouses home country, clearly they won’t have any us immigration status yet since they are at home but they still get on deers & come to base & all that. So if it works for them why wouldn’t it for his stepson?

A lot of organisations use a SSN as an easy identifying number when it has nothing to do with Social Security, there is always a back up way so just a question of finding it, the people at the front end may not know because it is not needed very often.

Even without a SSN, I think a base DEERS office can generate a DOD number for him and register him in the DEERS system.  Of course, you will have to have all the appropriate documentation like marriage certificate, birth certificate, etc, to establish that he is a military dependent.
