When is a good time to start applying for jobs?

I sent my AOS package on Oct 19. Obviously I'm not allowed to work until I have the work permit in my hands, but when is it okay to start applying for jobs and getting in touch with potential employers? I do understand that I wouldn't be able to accept any potential offer at this point, but are employers flexible and understanding of this situation?

Back when I applied for my post completion OPT (after graduation), I started applying about 2.5 months after I send my application. I'm glad everything fell into place, because they didn't get back to my application right away, it was a 2 stage interview (a week apart), and once I got the offer I told them I'm still waiting for my EAD (~ another 2 weeks).

A friend told me, when they like you they will rather wait for you than go through the whole interview process again. Also, other people will at least make them wait another 2 weeks, because they will need to give their current company a 2 weeks notice. Apart from interview performance, the level of specialty/skills required to perform the job could significantly affect their willingness to wait. Worst come to worst it would be a good interview experience for you and to gauge how much you will earn. Good luck!

I would think it would depend on what kind of a job you are looking for. If you have a professional license for a more skilled job, you could prob start looking - it is more likely that a firm looking for a skilled candidate will hold a position for a month or two, whereas for a job in something like retail or food service, they need workers as soon as they put the ad out, so I would wait for a more entry-level position.

In the meantime, you can work on your resume, start connecting to others on places like LinkedIn or looking through indeed, theglassceiling for whats in your area, salaries, etc to make a plan for when your AOS comes through. I've heard it can take 4-6 months.

Thank you for your responses! I figured doing the research during this time is a good idea, just to see what's out there and what the options are. I am trying to transition into another field, so I understand that my lack of experience will be quite a setback. But I'll feel so much better when I'm finally allowed to go out there and see what the future holds :)
