Change of Consulate

Hi all-

I was wondering if my husband accepts a job in Canada, since he will be living there, can he go through Montreal Consulate for his interview, rather than in Mumbai, India. We are not at the NVC yet and I think this will take place prior to that step. I am thinking yes but just want to be sure especially if someone has experience in this area, it is very expensive to have to take time off to travel with a new job.

If he will have legal residency there, then yes he can. That said, transferring the case at NVC is difficult since it's only there for a very short period of time. If it gets sent to India, you can contact Montreal and request that Mumbai transfers the case there. Check my timeline in my signature below for an example from earlier this year.

A spouse visa case is at NVC at least a couple months.  No problem switching.  He can interview in his country of citizenship or his country of residence.

There's a difference between "legal residence" which in Canada is called "landed resident" and being there on a work visa.  A work visa and actually residing in Canada is all he'll need to transfer to Montreal.

Ahhh so,  it won't matter, if he is there for a work  visa or as a perm resident.

Changing consulate can be done and I've read about it on VJ too. For personal reasons, I had to change my visa interview from New Delhi Embassy to Mumbai Consulate but when I contacted UStraveldocs they said it will take 3 weeks for the case file to transfer from consulate to consulate. But since you want your case to transfer from one country to another country you may add another 1-2 weeks extra. I think you should be writing a letter explaining why you want to change the consulate. You may contact ustraveldocs on the following numbers
