saga of N400 interview rescheduling

Hello everyone!

First of all, I would like to thank everyone here for writing their stories/suggestions/questions. I found numerous helpful tricks, advises over the years.

Secondly, I thought that my story may help someone in the future. So here it goes.

I and my wife submitted our N-400 forms for naturalization in December of 2016. We received our biometric appointments at the beginning of January'17. After several months we received two separate notices that our interviews were scheduled. They were scheduled exactly when we were supposed to be traveling. There was no way we could have skipped our travel as it was both family [my dad turned 80! how could we miss this!] and work [I have two back to back travels related to my work] related. At any rate, we followed instructions on our interview notices and wrote two separate letters explaining why we couldn't come and kindly asked to reschedule. It happened that we couldn't schedule InfoPass as we had to leave almost the next day after we received those interview letters. So we sent our letters via USPS Express Mail with delivery notifications. When already overseas we have received confirmation that our letters were delivered and signed for. Weeks pass by and everything was OK. Then all of a sudden I received a text message that the status of our cases was recently changed [I am subscribed to any changes of our cases - very neat service, highly recommended]. I go check what happened - both our cases show that "you missed interviews blah-blah-blah this significantly affects your case". This was, of course, quite scary. On top of that we received notices in the mail stating that we had 30 days to explain why we missed our interviews. So I set InfoPass appointments for myself and separately for my wife [anticipating that an officer may refuse to talk about two cases at once]. We got back safely from our travels and went to our field office. Both go to two separate windows and plead our cases. I showed all my documents, notification confirmation, etc and my officer told me that he "will request my case to see if the letter was received". He asked me to write another letter explaining my situation [again!]. So I did. Now my wife spoke with her officer and the officer told my wife that everything was ok, the officer checked on my wife's case right in front of her and said that the original letter to reschedule our interview was received on time and approved, that my wife shouldn't worry and everything is ok. On the same day the status of my wife's case has changed to "in line for interview" and the very next day it changed again to "interview was scheduled". My case hasn't changed its status at all. We are joking now that I'll be on fiancé visa soon :-). I may need to do InfoPass one more time if this continues for another 2-3 weeks.

I will update this topic once I hear anything about my case. So, folks, if at all possible, please, do not reschedule your interviews as it is literally pain in the ###.

Wow was a fiasco!  Do you know the name of the officer your wife saw at her infopass?  If so, when you do a second infopass, I'd see if you can ask to speak directly with that person if your second meeting doesn't give you any satisfaction.

Unfortunately I don't. I think everything is going to be OK eventually. It's just frustrating to see how various people doing the same job take their responsibilities differently.

P.S. Forgot to add that calling their 800 number is a waste of time.

I used to call USCIS way back when for almost everything under the sun during my AOS days.  I learned that their information consisted of mostly reading off info from their website almost verbatim.

This time around I politely continue to request to speak with an L2 officer over and over again until they get fed up and can't wait to transfer me.

I didn't even know that it was possible. Good to know!

Well, personally I wouldn't ask for an L2 if I had a simple policy question or needed basic information...but for deeper info pertaining to my case?  Yes.

Sometimes the customer service reps give attitude when you ask to speak to an L2 (maybe they get disciplined somehow if they pass too many calls to them daily or something like that) and refuse to transfer you, but as long as you keep polite about it and press on it, they will eventually.

If not, hang up, and call back to request the transfer from someone else.  Considering you've had this mess over your interview scheduling, I'm sure they will pass you onto an L2 to confirm if you are in-line.

You guys make the 2nd and 3rd case reporting rescheduling issues this week.

In the past they were usually good with rescheduling requests but now I wonder if it is a computer system issue or officer incompetency.

as promised I am updating on what's going on with our case.

First, good news:

my wife is a citizen now.

Bad news:

my case is still where it was months ago [i.e. nowhere]. I have received a letter from USCIS stating that my interview will be rescheduled within 60 days. This letter was sent 60 days ago [LOL] and no interview was scheduled. So I decided to go see them again. I am not really sure what I need to say except "#######, guys!". This is already beyond ridiculous.

At least your wife's journey is done and over now.  Congrats to her!

As for you, make sure to take all letters you've received from USCIS over this mess so that the infopass person can see the timeline for themselves right in front of their face---instead of just giving you the response of "you need to wait X amount of days".

Honestly, at this point, I would be requesting to speak to a supervisor when at the infopass, if you find you are getting nowhere with the person.

thank you for your advises, folks. I didn't know I may request to speak with a supervisor. I can certainly ask an officer but I am not sure he/she will do it, or will he/she?
