Hi everyone

I have received one speeding ticket in the past and paid a fine of $120. Should I answer "Yes"  to the following question on the N-400 form (Part 12, Question 23)?

Quote

Have you ever been arrested, cited, or detained by any law enforcement officer (including any immigration official or any official of the U.S. armed forces) for any reason?

Now I know that this question has been asked a million times on this forum, but I'm confused after reading all the posts because some people are suggesting to answer "yes" while the others suggest answering "no".

Can you please suggest what to do?

Thanks so much!

I saw someone here reviewing her interview for naturalization that said that at the moment of the interview the Interviewer asked her this question and she said to the officer that even though she answered "no" in her form, she actually got a ticket and paid a $200.00 fine for not completely stopping at a stop sign, she said that the interviewer then changed her answer to "yes" and said it wasn't a problem. In her post she said that people should say "yes" if they have had a ticket as it is a "traffic citation".

Good Luck!

I just had my interview (7-20) and though I put "no" on my application,  during the interview I felt I had to be honest and mention that I did get a ticket for those " on blinking red light after stop you can make a right turn". The police officer felt I didn't come to a complete stop. I disagreed but anyway I paid the ticket. That happened about 13 years ago. So I mentioned this to the interviewing officer and asked if I should have answered "yes " on the application. She said yes. So she crossed out my" no " answer , wrote yes and asked me for details , like when it happened , if I went to court , how much was ticket etc. I asked if this created a problem , she said no. So you should write down " yes" and there is a space below on that same page of the application where you can describe what happened and when and the cost of ticket and that it was paid. I would include a copy of payment , a copy of your driving record too and when you go to your interview take the same items. And yes I know that you aren't supposed to send in any documentation if ticket was less than $500 but I think it will just lend to a smoother interview etc.

Good luck!!

Thanks for the info, guys.

It looks like I'll have to answer 'yes' to the question and type the details about the speeding ticket and take the payment receipt, etc. to the interview.

I had my interview today for N400, I did not mention my tickets because speeding tickets are just a minor citation, passed my interview and next week is my Oath Ceremony.

I answered no, but in the interim before my interview I was able to track down documentation of the speeding ticket. At the interview when we got to the question,  I said I wasn't sure how to answer for a minor traffic violation. She typed in notes and took my documentation.  Had I not been able to find out which court, where they had moved and changed judges, and that they still had documentation to give me, I probably would have kept my mouth shut.

I had a one "illegal u turn" ticket on my record. I checked Yes to that question and listed the traffic citation + fine.

The officer gave me hell for that ticket. Officer made me change my answer to Question 24 from No to Yes: Have you ever been convicted of a crime or offense? and called my traffic ticket a crime.

The driving abstract I got online from the DMV showing the paid fine was not enough. Luckily I have also gotten a  sealed certified paper from the state proving I have paid the ticket.
