Trump's "very friendly" talk with Duterte stuns aides and critics alike

WASHINGTON — When President Trump called President Rodrigo Duterte of the Philippines on Saturday, the American leader’s national security aides saw it as part of a routine diplomatic outreach to Southeast Asian leaders. Mr. Trump, characteristically, had his own ideas.

During their “very friendly conversation,” the administration said in a late-night statement, Mr. Trump invited Mr. Duterte, an authoritarian leader accused of ordering extrajudicial killings of drug suspects in the Philippines, to visit him at the White House.

Now, administration officials are bracing for an avalanche of criticism from human rights groups. Two senior officials said they expected the State Department and the National Security Council, both of which were caught off guard by the invitation, to raise objections internally.

Yeah to bad that Duterte doesn't care to much for Metro Manila at all, and he would rather spend all his time in Davao. The same can be said for Trump and Mar a Lago.

Duterte and Trump are two men that command respect from people and each other. That is why Duterte felt slighted by Obama last year because he felt that Obama was chastising him for EJK's in the Philippine drug war. That is why he flatly came out and called Obama a SOB and that he can go to hell, also reminding him that they are a sovereign country and not a colony of the US anymore. You may think of Duterte as hot headed and he is, but he is a smart man and is can speak better English than he can Tagalog. He looks after the poor in Davao City and now the country. My wife and I hope we can meet him face to face one day. 

 

But what I am getting at is that Trump talks to Duterte like equals and not down to him. That is what Duterte hates most is when he feels like he is not respected.

So let me get this straight. According to leftist logic it is evil to talk to an elected leader of another country. When Duterte first took office he was basically ready to cut ties with the US in favor of China in part because he saw Obama as being weak (his own words). He was ready to go along with China taking over the South China Sea (including some islands that are part of the Philippines). Now that Trump is president he has changed his tune because he knows he will have some backing if he opposes China's imperialism. The Philippines is a strategic location for military purposes and it is good foreign policy to have good relations with the Philippines. There is no conspiracy here. It is very simple.

I don't agree with his drug policy but I can understand it considering the amount of drug violence he dealt with in Davao.

As one can see with Putin doing whatever he wants and Duterte telling Obama to pound sand, leaders with a spine clearly knew a female cat when they saw one.
