Stockholm lorry rams crowds, killing at least three people

A lorry has smashed into a store in central Stockholm, killing at least three people, Swedish police say. 

Several people were also injured in the incident on Drottninggatan (Queen Street), one of the city's major pedestrian streets.

Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven said everything pointed to an act of terrorism and that one person had been arrested. He gave no details.

The firm that owns the lorry said it had been hijacked earlier in the day. 

The crash happened at the Ahlens department store just before 15:00 local time (13:00 GMT). 

Swedish brewery Spendrups said its lorry had been stolen on its way to a restaurant delivery.

My sister-in-law walked by the exact place there an hour prior... All my friends have checked in on the nationally created facebook page for letting loved-ones know they are safe, so I'm breathing a sigh of relief - and at the same time it makes me so sad.... Police are checking exit points to other countries - Police in Norway that are normally unarmed, have armed themselves.. Swedish and Finnish police are armed and out on the streets in the cities...

Someone is now arrested.

"A man was arrested in north Stockholm after he confessed to carrying out the truck attack, daily newspaper Aftonbladet reported. The man reportedly had some light injuries and said he was responsible for the attack. 

Police later confirmed one person had been arrested."

Was there any more news regarding attacks in other parts of the city?  I haven't seen anything, and reports of gunfire may have been wrong considering the chaos, but I thought I would check.

 

Also glad to hear your sister-in-law is ok.  We were in a similar boat a few days ago during the attack in St. Petersburg as our cousin who is a university student lives near the train station that was attacked.  Thankfully, she is also fine.

Just that the information was negated - no confirmed gun firings... - the arrested man that admitted the crime is an Uzbeki national.

The driver who's truck was stolen, had gotten out to deliver goods to a restaurant - a masked man jumped into the driver's seat, and the driver tried to get in front of the truck to stop him but was hit by the truck - he is not injured - black tire marks were left in the ground so he must have sped of quickly...

I understand that. This just happened today.... today I was sitting counting in ppl that I went to University with. People that I know pass that street every day. You walk out of the central station in Stockholm after arriving by bus or train from the rest of Sweden or from the airport, and this place is literally across the street.

I guess I don't understand the utter lack of empathy or emotion.

The Police in Sweden did an amazing job today... they have practiced how to respond for a long time,  knowing that it is likely a matter of time. No one has thought otherwise. A training was held as late as last week... 

There is no way of knowing when or where these things will ever happen... I pray that the person making those comments will never experience anything similar.

The people of Sweden is uniting in the face of this. Ppl are helping the person on the street not being able to get home, giving free food to ppl stuck downtown etc... I would think ppl in this country would know the feeling of your home being attacked, and that the last thing needed at that time is for someone with an agenda to only hear their own voice to trample all over the memory of the people who died and their families.

..We do not have "tolerance" for terror. We do however, as a nation, not believe the solution is to refuse help to ppl in dire need! It's very easy to sit in the safety of your own home,  without bombs falling outside your window, without your sister being raped and your father executed, to to sit and talk and have opinions. 

Just looking at how Trump has acted surrounding the gas attack,  shows exactly how easy it is to sit and have an "opinion" about what to do... 

This is something very different from what needs to be done. 

I'm just so tired of the hatred in online forums from scared little people with big mouths. I realize this comment might get deleted - if so, be it...

I get it.  When I heard about the attack in Quebec City earlier this year I was in a panic at first and I don't even know anyone there.  But it was my homeland being attacked by God knows who or what at the time
