I am not sure why you wouldn't want to fire first. If they have a gun and all you did was alert them to the fact you are aware they are there and that you are armed, you could end up putting your whole family in danger. Too big a risk for me to take personally. No, there's no room for second thoughts in these situations. You fire.

How did you know?

It's not that I wouldn't want to fire first, I wouldn't have a gun in the first place. That's what I meant. It's hard to comment on what if I would do IF I owned a gun, because the idea of owning a gun is not something I would ever do.

I guess the other thing I forgot to comment on was the "fake warning shot" - If you are so confident in how you are reacting, don't fire the fake warning shot. Own up to what you did. Don't be a hypocrite.

If you were really from Texas you would have a gun.

Your reply gave it away. Good thing you didn't say EVERYONE in Vermont has a gun, otherwise the cops would be knocking at your door.

Is that what happened to him? I thought he was in Ankara :P

You know, they don't call it Vermont Carry for nothing.

Unfortunately these days, you can't always trust what's going to happen whether you are in the right or not. I was just saying what we were told by someone who knows these situations much better than we do, that it's always recommended just for extra good measure to put that warning shot up there. Anyhow, while I don't come from a place with gun culture like the US(Israel is like Europe in that sense because except for law enforcement and soldiers, hardly no one gets to carry guns) they also don't scare me. Far from it. I didn't grow up with guns in my house, but I did do military service. It was a culture shock for my wife at first when she moved there  with me and walked around the mall and saw groups of soldiers just walking around with M16 rifles. You don't often see that in the Us. Eventually she got used to it, and last year in Vegas shot a gun for the first time. She actually did pretty well, and now can't understand why she was so intimidated by it before.

But still, you should have a gun since you live there.

I'll decline and we will see what happens. I guess if I stop posting here at some point you guys can all assume the worst :)

For now I'm fine. When we have kids, that will be a sticking point for us. Part of why we want to head back to the UK.

Sorry don't buy it. If you want to make the decision to shoot the man, then shoot the man. You are not just a liar but a coward (not you specifically, just "you" meaning whoever fires that warning shot) if you try to "cover it up" with a fake "warning shot". It's hypocritical. You make the choice you make in life and you deal with the consequences.

It's not that I'm afraid of guns themselves. I just know I wouldn't shoot a person. I could hold it up and point it. I would never go through with pulling the trigger. I firmly believe if an armed robber saw me pointing a gun at them they would be MORE likely to shoot at me, rather than less. That's my reason right now with no children. Once I have children, I'll have more than one reason not to own a gun.

You are not dealing with Justice, you are dealing with the Law, makes perfect sense to make sure you defend your position as best you can.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Fine with me. I'd still consider you (again not you right now but in that situation...don't want any moderators down my neck again ;)) a hypocrite and a coward. I realize that probably doesn't matter too much to you, just stating my opinion. It's weak if you can't stand up for the decisions you make.

Why should you need to stand up in such a situation? You defended yourself against the bad guys, it should be a no brainer. However anybody who has lived any length of time knows things are often not like that. And the Cop certainly did, I have heard too many stories of miscarriage of Justice not to take that into account, sadly those in power have agenda's and Justice is often not amongst them.

Not arguing with the idea that it is "practical" to be a hypocrite and liar. Yes it sounds very practical in that situation to "cover your tail" so you don't get in trouble for what you did. I'm just saying I would find it cowardly. I will never be in that situation so I don't have to worry about it. If it doesn't bother you that's fine.

People i personally know who have been screwed by the system have had nothing to do with this sort of situation but if you think otherwise you are deluded.
