Throwing the door wide open for 6+ billion of the world's people to freely immigrate to 21st century America is an idea that is so stupid in so many ways that it isn't even worth considering.

Making legal immigration easier and in unlimited numbers to eliminate illegal immigration is about as dumb as killing a cancer patient to control cancer.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

How about we legalize killing people, that way we can stop murder?

We've tried that. it's called the death penalty/

There are a number of undocumented immigrants in this country who have family that are either USC or in legal status. Fixing the immigration process to accomodate families would lower the number of illegals. The process is costly, difficult to navigate and long- something shoudl be done for these cases.

Something is being done.. they are jacking up the fees so they can hire more people and modernize their equipment to improve processing times.

so how do you propose that immigration be legalized so there would be no illegal immigration? isn't that what we do when we fill out all this friggin paperwork? do you mean make it free for *anyone*? if that were to happen the USCIS would be out of business.

There is another school of thought on just that very subject. And that is to end the illogical practice of Chain Migration. The truth is that other than real refugees and asylees, nobody forces the vast majority of people to immigrate. If they miss their extended families so much, they should stay home. Immigration should not be about meeting the needs of the immigrant, but should primarily focus on the needs of the nation hosting the immigrant.

The fact that many of the people mentioned above feel "entitled" to instant immigration because their non-nuclear family member immigrated is a perfect example of the arrogance of many illegal aliens.

Well to answer the original poster, We already have legalized immigration. Thats why there so many different types of visa's and we allow quite a large number of people legally into this country every year. I don't know stats, but I believe we are either the number one country or certainly on the top of the heap in numbers that allows legal immigration.

Most other nations with a high standard of living, selectively chose immigrants and it is only a small number based on national need.

Hey I'm trying to get a LEGAL immigrant here, so I support immigration as it was what made america. But we definetly need to close down borders to illegal immigration mostly from mexico and aggressively deport them or have a program where they can go threw the same long (monetary contributing ) process the rest of us do.

We used to have a legitimate guest worker program prior to WWII I think, I would favor one that ties a business sponsoring workers for one/two year status, they pay taxes and can be tracked.

By the way CUTE KITTIES !!!!!!!

Legal immigration is legal!!!!! VJ is a board dedicated to it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

On illegal immigration - I think regardless of what draconian measures people want to see implemented, an amnesty of some sort is inevitable - especially as we're talking about an ineffectual policy that hasn't been properly enforced for decades.

Noone outside of some wannabe totalitarian nut is going to stand for election on the promise that when elected they will start mass detention and deportation. Not only will they lose the hispanic vote - but they will get civil unrest that will make the LA riots look like a picnic.
