Parental permission for children to travel

I understand a notarised letter of permission is required for children to travel under K1/K2 - from the non- present parent.

 

My question is just on the STAGE this is required. Initial submission by US applicant or as I think it may be (?) the filing by the non resident fiance/e?

Depending on the specific embassy, you might be asked for a statement from the non-immigrating parent authorizing the child's immigration or a court order stating as much. As for the travel authorization, it depends on what the rules of your country are.

 

For Portugal, for me, for example, I had to provide the embassy with a statement from my ex-husband saying he allowed our daughters to immigrate to the US to be with me. Every time they leave the country, whether it's to visit him (he lives in the UK) or to return here, they need notarized statements from both parents authorizing the trip. It's a pain. However, because they're not UK citizens, they don't need anything when leaving the UK.

I went to great lengths to get a notarised letter from an absent father whom didn't even reside in my country, only to not even be asked for it at my interview, I was however asked for it at check in at the airport.
