If your income isn't enough, can assets/bank savings of 140,000 quality? Will that be enough for the 1-864 Form/affidavit?

The amount you need depends on your family size.  You should be able to demonstrate at least 5 times the difference between 125% of the poverty line and your income.  There are charts that show what 125% of the poverty line is for different family sizes.  And your family size should of course include the person/people you are sponsoring.

 

Assets = 5 X (needed amount- income)

Do you lack any income at all? Will you be combining those savings with an income or are you just hoping on the savings alone?

 

Second will there just be you and your partner or is there a kid in there too?

Yes you can use assets.  Whether $140'000  is enough depends on how many are in your household.

It also depends on the asset and the Embassy.  For example, you can't include your only vehicle or the home you are living in. 

 

It's not automatic -- the officer can inquire about the source of the assets, how readily they could be converted to cash, etc, and require additional assets and/or a joint sponsor.
