I am very confused about the Green Card process. I am reading in some places that the card is automatically sent after my husband's entry into the US (which was on August 26, 2016). I am reading in other places that we must do an Adjustment of Status, pay $1070 and wait. I called the USCIS, and the lady who answered told me I need to file an I-485, which is 1070, and the waiting period is NINE MONTHS at my local office for a green card to be processed. I cannot wait 9 months for my husband to work. I don't make enough to support us both for that long. Someone please help. How do I get the Green Card? Will it be automatically sent? Where is that information online? Why did the USCIS lady misinform me, if that is the case? Thank you.

Your husband had an immigrant visa, which means he became a Legal Permanent Resident when he landed in the US. You do not need to file for Adjustment of Status. You need to pay the Greencard fee ($165) if you didn't already.

Your husband can work now. His visa was stamped when he landed and his visa plus the stamp is proof of ability to work and proof of LPR status.

This is what you need to do. Please read the following links about fee and To Do's

1. https://www.uscis.gov/file-online/uscis-immigrant-fee

2. https://www.uscis.gov/tools/how-do-i-customer-guides/how-do-i-pay-uscis-immigrant-fee

3. If Social Security card hasn't arrive. Go to the SS office now and apply.

4. Once you pay for green card it can take 4 weeks to 120 days or more.

Your husband doesn't need the physical green card to work he has all he needs if he has a SS#.

I doubt if she misinformed it's all how you told her how your husband came here. Or you may have said "my husband is in the US now how does he get a green card". So she assumed other means and thought you were needing to adjust status.

USCIS do not advise. This is where research and doing your due diligence is a must so you should know everything that is expected and needed. But now you know . Good luck.
