AgResearch scientists are attempting to breed ewes

with four nipples instead of two so that fertile mothers

can look after triplets.

New Zealand scientists plan to tackle the thorny problem of ewes producing more lambs

than they have nipples to accommodate, by simply upping mum's teat-count,

Stuff.co.nz reports.

Apparently, NZ's ovine population has become more fertile over the past 10 years and

females often drop triplets. AgResearch Invermay scientist George Davis solemnly

explained: "A triplet, if he is the runt of the litter, is usually doomed."

Accordingly, Davis is scouring sheep flocks for ewes with four nipples, and hopes to use

them to assemble a flock "from which rams can be bred to pass on this trait".

Ha! People are nuts! This doesn't seem like a fab idea...

We used to raise sheep, and it's not really a problem of how many nipples there are so much as how much milk the ewe can produce. Even if they're fed lots of high quality, high energy grain, they're really only built to produce enough milk for two. We had one amazing ewe manage to nurse four lambs for two weeks, but that was the maximum - she was getting exhausted! :wacko:
