Hi everyone,

I'm working on N-400 to apply for Naturalization. Here is my problem :

-My maidden name is : QUYEN THI NGOC DOAN

- My name was changed after married is: QUYEN THI NGOC DUONG

Now, I would like to keep my last name by requesting a Name change in N-400 ( in section Name Change) : QUYEN DOAN NGOC DUONG

If anyone had been through this similar cases like this, please help me. I don't know if i can do it. because it is said :" you do not need to request a name change if your name has changed through marriage, divorce, or other course oder." but i really want to get my last name back.

Thank you very much!

Changing the name during this point is the best, fastest and the cheapest way to do it. one more thing that is useful will be that there are more judicial oath ceremonies occurs than the administrative ones and that is exactly what you want. you can change your name to whatever.

What's your last name on your GC? If it's "DUONG", there is no reason to select "I would like to change name...." option. You would put "DUONG" as your last name on your legal name info-Part 2-1.

So your middle name would be changed. Then you might need to select "Name Change" option. Whether or not you will need to swear in before a judge will be decided at your oath ceremony then. Others with first hand experience might suggest more.

Check your state laws..Name change rules are totally different from immigration.

You have to legally change your name as required by the laws in your home state.

If your current name on your SSN card, DL is different from what you want to take now, then you have to do it legally before you transfer it to your immigration process.

Change of name is under Federal jurisdiction so make sure you do it locally (within your state) per the laws there.

It is not decided there. OP go to her county court or call her county clerk for the proper procedure.

Name change is not something to take lightly. It has to be recorded at the court records.

1 I found this link that says you can change at naturalization.

http://www.alllaw.com/articles/nolo/us-immigration/change-name-when-apply-citizenship.html

2 . And this support for my point:

https://www.nycourts.gov/courts/nyc/civil/namechanges.shtml

Looks like you can. I went through the second option not the first.

Verify the first information.

But you will need to change your name on SSN and driver's license after the process.

that is right, like i mentioned earlier, the judge presides over an judicial ceremony. just select the option on the app that you would like to change your name. it is free and fast.
