This week, the news came up with something that made me really intrigued...

A oman from Nicaragua gave birth to a baby with microcephaly from Zika virus infection. Ok...

They said that she got Zika in Nicaragua, so the problem was not in US...

But now my question (or polemic) question is:

- How she could get a flight close to her due time?

- How a CBP allowed her to be admitted?

Sure that he didn´t knew about the Zika situation... But come on... She wasn´t an immigrant and she wanted to come to America to seek treatment... And as a doctor I can say that once the baby is diagnosed with microcephaly, there´s NOTHING to do... Just go to a very nice obtetric clinic to give birth and keep this baby in intensive care to try to make him develop. And the mother of the baby said that she was there to visit her family too...

Now? It will cost at least U$1.000.000 to treat this new american citizen.

From which pocket?

Wow... Many people told me even here that there´s nothing about luck to be admitted in US... But she got her jackpot! Wow!!!

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3623706/Mother-Zika-baby-born-New-Jersey-says-flew-America-seek-treatment-doctors-Honduras-underestimated-symptoms.html

I feel sorry for the baby, but not for her.

She came here legally, and they let her in legally. So she's here legally.. for now. And like it or lump it, this poor child has to now experience the agony of the remainder of it's days unaware of much.. Sadly for these children, there is not much of a ''lifetime'' that awaits them, if at all.

I understand all you guys about the suffering situation... I "breathe" that everyday. I live in Brazil and this is my daily basis.

What I wanted to know is how everyone face it (and until now it looks exactly how I expected) looking by the immigration point of view.

Yeah... Everyone feel sorry from the woman and the baby, but let's take the emotions by the side and look in another point of view...

I'm a woman who lives in a "Zika virus" country... The last thing that I want in my life is have a baby with those sequels... What should I do? There's a lot of things to do... Don't get pregnant for now or if I'll get pregnant take all the necessary care to be away from mosquitos, right? Or go to a city in my country less affected... So she got the risk. I'm crazy to have a baby too but do you guys think that I'll get this risk for now? No way! And I'm not on my 20's anymore and I have to be fast because soon I'll be very "old" for it and the risks are others...

Then it will come more 1.000.000 excuses, like: oh, she got pregnant suddenly... Ok...

No, it's not ok... If you use an anticonceptional method correctly, the chances to get pregnant are in between 1%...

Ah, but she came legally...

Well... Many people when they got their ban and are here on VJ waiting their huge immigration process arrived legally in US! Even me! And I can say that a good amount didn't gave this kind of expense to the government, but they had their bans and that's it.

CBPs don't feel sorry from anyone! They just do their job (I read that here sooooooo many times that I think I learned that very well and it was my mantra for a while when I didn't wanted to accept what happened to me). And they have to keep doing it.

In her case, something happened, for sure.

Because it's clear that women next to their due time in tourism have to be questioned. They have to be retained to fly.

I'll just say that this is just another sad 3rd world country story that was unluckily lucky to receive this gift.

People really don't like to face wrong things... And life is a learning time for all of us. Everyday I learn and I do my best to don't commit any mistake and don't be unfair with anyone not putting an excuse for a mistake that I made. Suffering time it's not an excuse.

I´LL START TO LIVE BACK AGAIN WHEN I´LL BE ON MY HUBBY´S ARMS, FOREVER AND EVER. UNTIL THERE, I DON´T LIVE. I SURVIVE. (L)

The $1mil estimate is lifetime costs. The baby is a US Citizen and can stay, but the mother cannot stay, so it is unlikely that the baby's care will be here. That is just sensationalist journalism. Even if the mother gave the baby up, whoever cared for the baby would have her on their insurance, unless they are so poor they are on medicaid, which is possible. But most likely the US gov will not be paying for this baby for her whole life.

The baby was delivered premature, so we don't know how far into her pregnancy the mother was when she flew.

The baby has relatives in US, she (it´s a girl) will stay, for sure.

If it was on my family, I would choose this for a better care.

Not enough premature to don´t appear any sign of pregnancy... If it was too premature, no condition to survive, specially with this sequels...

U$1.000.000 at least. It can be U$10.000.000.

This is only assuming that the mother will abandon the baby and leave her with relatives, and that the relatives do not have health insurance.

Pregnant women are allowed to fly.

If it was you?

Go back to the middle of "nowhere" with a sick baby or stay with medicare?

Yes they are allowed to fly, but not after 28 weeks pregnancy (more clear, on the third trimester) without a doctor allowance.

The mom can't stay here. I would not leave my baby in the US, if it was me. I would be illegal and have no life except taking care of my sick and sad baby. And I would have no healthcare myself, no job, no DL, no nothing.

And pregnant women can fly until 8/8.5 months on many airlines. I flew in my third trimester; no one batted an eye.

So I don't really get what you are mad about? That the US might spend money on this baby? About birth tourism? About the bad care in Nic? Honestly, there are going to be more cases like this.

TBH, and people might get mad at me for this (because taxpayer money) but I'd rather pay for a woman that was desperate to get help for herself and her unborn child, than a person that was strictly doing it for birth tourism. I believe this woman's intentions were in a good place, and she still entered legally, unlike many others that don't. We unfortunately don't have visas for people in these situations, so she chose the best path she could. If you have read anything about this woman's story, she had been ill and feared that she would give this disease to her unborn baby.. because of the poor healthcare system they not only told her she was fine but that the baby was fine too. Perhaps if she had an accurate diagnosis she may have made a different choice, and then had people screaming at her for getting an abortion (if it is even legal or accepted in her country)... by then it was too late. A person cannot 100% foolproof being bit by a mosquito. It's simply impossible. There is a lack education and uncertainty going around about Zika. How long to wait to get pregnant, what to do if you are already pregnant and have been bit, what to do if you think yourself ill but your stupid doctor says nah it's okay, what to do if your husband doesn't tell you he's been exposed, people that show no symptoms at all and don't know, and lack of testing. There are even significant unknowns about how long to wait to have children, if at all once exposed.

Yes, probably I would do the same for my kid.

I'm not mad! Lol

I just wanted to see and show others that immigration it's not just about law and so on and forth... It's a mix of a lot of stuff.

Everyone gets compassionate with this really sad story.

I could not hold my emotions if I was about to admit someone in this situation and even help in every way that I can.

But I can guarantee that there are many other sad stories in between immigration situations but not all these stories people involve themselves. What is really sad for one can be without any meaning to another one.

Following this thoughts... I just wanted to say that once we all are humans and have emotions, even the most trained ones can make mistakes because they were dominated by their feelings... so immigration IS not just a matter o laws... It involves luck and many other things that people just realize that happens in extreme situations like this.

So... That's why I'll be always saying GOOD LUCK to everyone here in VJ who is passing through the bad situations that I'm passing for now because of this process. And I wish that everyone who's reading this think about how many stupid judgment happened and still happens in this site.

I always felt bully with lots of answers from people here. Maybe I'm over reacting but I can say that a person on their emotional limit like me and others are for now, they can't handle that as a simple stupid reply.

Thank you for your replies and I'm sorry for the outflow :)

I completely agree with you and as I said, as a normal human it is impossible to don't get involved in a sad situation like this and agree to pay for it. In my country I pay a loooooot of taxes and if it was used to help this kind of people, it's ok, but here, the government use it just to enhance the corruption.

About lack of information... Yeah... Information and prevention don't belong to a 3rd world country... This is just for whom is about to grow in life on those places.

There are and there were a lot of possibilities to avoid this, to act in a situation like this, for sure.

Life is a choice every single minute. We choose all the time things for us. No one can judge about our choices but we are not obligated to accept everyone's choices and situations. We need simply give respect.

I respect her choice. But I don't accept by the simple fact that she had an opportunity that many other could not have.

Under the law, everyone is equal, isn't it?

There are tons of cases like her case around me... I wish I could help!

So it will be ok handle the situation like this? Closing eyes? Is it fair?
