Hi! I just wanna ask.. should I need to update my status to married and have my name changed on my passport before I could proceed with the visa processing? Our petition just got approved today but we're still waiting for the packet of forms.. I just wanna know if you did any changes with your passport before proceeding with scheduling your interview etc.?

It's probably easier if you get your passport changed to your married name now.

I'm assuming on all the forms you listed your married last name? If so, that's the name your GC will be issued in and further down the road, if you decide to travel, it's easier to have your name be consistent on all documents.

I see.. Thanks. That's also what I thought since it's a spousal visa.. Unfortunately, when I tried to schedule for renewal/change of name in my passport with DFA Manila, the next schedule available would be on July..

Hmm, if it's not possible then there's nothing to do really. You can get it changed at the PI embassy once you're in the US.

I have read one suggestion here before that it is advisable to change your passport to your married name and process everything in your married name.

To change your name on your passport you need to attend the CFO GCP to get the Certificate, DFA requires the certificate before your passport can be changed to your married name.

For me personally I filed our i130 under my maiden name only because i had only just got a new passport just before we got married and also because I have to be back in my home country to do a name change (NZ) and currently live in Australia.

We weighed up applying now, and dealing with the $425 fee and name change docs for my greencard after its issued .... VS waiting for my name change and new documents and then filing. We preferred to get the ball rolling now and pay the fee late to change it, as we didn't want to wait any longer. Would have been a few months and also fees to change licence, passport efc anyway.

It's really up to you. For us time was our priority. But for you it may be different.

thanks for the responses guys. yeah for us time is also a priority and so far everything is going well and smooth.. i was just worried that they'd question the consistencies because in my passport it's still my maiden name while in the petition and my ds260 it's in my married name..

Well, the thing is, just scheduling for appointment at the DFA is tight.. nothing's available until July. Oh well, I'll just try my luck at the interview and see what happens (finally got my case number, had medical and visa interview scheduled already). I'll post about it here in case anyone else runs into the same situation.

Hi sis. Hopefully you can update me about the process. Me too will use my maiden name in our spousal visa petition soon. But wondering the pros and cons of having a single name in my passport. I will follow this post for future references. Thank you. ?
