I hope someone out there can help me. We just finalized my wife's citizenship status and want to get her Mom's Green Card before her (my mother-in-law's) 6-month tourist visa expires next month. From what I can see we need to file the I-130, Petition for Alien Relative, and the I-485, Application to Register Permanent Resident or Adjust Status. I was told that we could get permission for her Mom to work while we are working through her Green Card process. Is that true? Is that done by using form I-765, Application For Employment Authorization? I just saw where the filing fee for I-765 is $380, but it said under certain circumstances this fee can be waived. Does anyone know anything about this?

Mom's work authorization expires when her allowed stay is finished (next month in your MIL's situation). It takes a few months to process. Not likely to get a fee waiver.

Filing for adjustment of status will take several months. See the Guides section here on VJ for the forms, etc.

Sounds like she is visiting.
