Wow, 4-5 hrs? 1 guest only, what if you have young children? No thanks. I'm guessing/hoping this is the worst case scenario. I know 4 ppl that are planning on coming to my oath ceremony.

Is the oath ceremony the only way of receiving a naturalization certificate? What happens in the case of the applicant being sick or even hospitalized? Is the only option to reschedule? What happens if you turn up late to the ceremony?

Hopefully Jimmy is able to respond to this.

As far as I found most Boston ceremonies take place at Faneuil Hall (with 300-400 new citizens) but once in a while they organize these large-attendance ceremonies at Hynes or TD Garden. Hynes website (https://massconvention.com/events/2016/06) shows the estimated attendance for this ceremony is 3000 people. Based on the one guest rule, I don't know if that's nearly 1500 new citizens taking oath but probably at least 1200 or so people will take oath that day. that's why they give heads up for a 4-5 hours long ceremony. I think here in Houston it's the same... they tell you to be there at 7 and you end up leaving around 12 or 1. Almost all that time is registering, turning in your green card, checking your certificate, and finding your seat... then waiting for 1499 others to do the same thing. Doesn't sound like something I'd want to bring guests to to be honest.

Most ceremonies don't have a limit on guests, but some do just because of the capacity of the venue. If the ceremony letter says 1 guest, then I would bring 1 guest... if there isn't room, they're not going to crowd people who followed the instructions to accommodate those who didn't... they're going to tell the extra guests to wait outside. At least that's how I'd hope it would work... but of course, exceptions are always made...

In some locations (one of the NYC locations for example), no guests are allowed in the room... they have to watch on a TV in a room on another floor. Meanwhile in Houston, you've got 1500 applicants with as many guests as they want and screaming children running around; easily over 5000 people in the hall.

If you can't make it to the ceremony, you need to reschedule. If you don't reschedule and you miss your oath, you get 1 more chance (after providing a written explanation). If you miss your second appointment, your application is denied and you have to reapply.

If you turn up late for the ceremony, they can decide whether or not to let you in... if you've missed the oath, then you're not a citizen; if you're in time for the oath then you are. If you get a really nice judge or administrator, then they may administer the oath separately after everyone else is done (this has happened but isn't at all likely).

You do not become a citizen until you take the oath. In very rare cases, USCIS will make hospital visits to administer the oath. In even rarer cases, the oath may be waived (as in the cases of posthumous naturalization).

I'm of the opinion that young children should not be in things like oath ceremonies.

I just got my oath ceremony letter on the mail!!!! 4 days after my interview!!!! My oath ceremony is this friday may 27th at 10 am!! Please someone can update my tracker? Please?

Some people like a party and others like a formal event... personally I would really like it if they implemented a 1 guest and no children rule, but that's just me.

A party of adults, sure, but the oath notice specifically says to "dress as befitting the dignity of the event", so it's not like it's going to be a party atmosphere in there.

Young children? No.

I think here in Houston it's the same... they tell you to be there at 7 and you end up leaving around 12 or 1. Almost all that time is registering, turning in your green card, checking your certificate, and finding your seat... then waiting for 1499 others to do the same thing. Doesn't sound like something I'd want to bring guests to to be honest.

Most ceremonies don't have a limit on guests, but some do just because of the capacity of the venue. If the ceremony letter says 1 guest, then I would bring 1 guest... if there isn't room, they're not going to crowd people who followed the instructions to accommodate those who didn't... they're going to tell the extra guests to wait outside. At least that's how I'd hope it would work... but of course, exceptions are always made...

In some locations (one of the NYC locations for example), no guests are allowed in the room... they have to watch on a TV in a room on another floor. Meanwhile in Houston, you've got 1500 applicants with as many guests as they want and screaming children running around; easily over 5000 people in the hall.

If you can't make it to the ceremony, you need to reschedule. If you don't reschedule and you miss your oath, you get 1 more chance (after providing a written explanation). If you miss your second appointment, your application is denied and you have to reapply.

If you turn up late for the ceremony, they can decide whether or not to let you in... if you've missed the oath, then you're not a citizen; if you're in time for the oath then you are. If you get a really nice judge or administrator, then they may administer the oath separately after everyone else is done (this has happened but isn't at all likely).

You do not become a citizen until you take the oath. In very rare cases, USCIS will make hospital visits to administer the oath. In even rarer cases, the oath may be waived (as in the cases of posthumous naturalization).

For example if the ceremony starts at 10am but you're requested to be there at 8am can your guests turn up at 9:30am? What if the applicant doesn't turn up till 9am or 9:30am since the questionnaire shouldn't take 2 hrs to fill out?

You are not a citizen until you get your naturalization certificate, so you cannot register to vote nor apply for a passport before the ceremony is over.

I know at the Chicago Field Office that I cannot apply for a passport on location. I will have to do it separately

Makes me wish they had same day oath as well as passport application.

So if you bring in passport photos can you apply for the passport after the ceremony? or just pick up an application and apply at a later date?

Unless the ceremony ends late, you can apply for a passport that same day. Most post offices accept passport applications until 4-5pm.
