Traveling Out of US with GC - Insurance

Hi,

2yr GC obtained. Booked a trip back to the UK with my family in March.

I have out of country medical insurance with my family listed as dependents from my employer.

I have rental car insurance through my credit card but it only pays for damage to the rental car, not any damage caused to other property if I was to get into an accident.

In the UK I always bought my rental car insurance and travel insurance (for flight/hotel issues) from a third party insurer. What do US people do for insurance in visiting other countries? Exactly the same?

I did some googling but the third party insurance seems a bit expensive compared to the UK.

Do you have liability auto insurance for driving in the US? If so, does it cover you for driving outside of the US?

Depending on your driving record, etc., US auto insurance (barebones policy for liability damages that you cause) can be very affordable. Not only that, but some insurance companies will you write you a policy that covers you, only, assuming you don't own a car that you need insured. These individual (no car) policies can be even less expensive. What I don't know is if these policies carry along with you when you drive in a foreign country.

For about 5 years, when I didn't own a car, I used one of these individual policies to cover liability and used VISA credit card auto insurance coverage to cover car damages. It allowed me to check the box waiving all insurance on US car rentals and still be totally covered. Although I did encounter a problem using this method renting a car for a month while I was working in Costa Rica. By Costa Rica law, I was required to purchase separate Costa Rica liability insurance - which was a little pricey.

Bottom line, you'd need to check the international coverage for any US policy, plus look into laws in UK for allowing you to use a US policy for coverage on a UK rental.
