Eight members of a Korean pop group were detained and denied entrance to the United States and claim it is because officials thought that they were sex workers.

Oh My Girl, a Seoul-based girl group whose members range in age from 16 to 21, arrived at Los Angeles International Airport on Wednesday and said they were held for more than 15 hours.

The young women traveled back to South Korea, and their management company said 'they were mistaken as working women".

The eight-member group, Oh My Girl, was set to perform Saturday at the Unforgettable Gala in Beverly Hills an awards show that honors Asian Americans in the media but instead were held and questioned by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials for 15 hours, representatives of the group's management agency WM Entertainment said in a statement.

WM Entertainment has cleared the misunderstanding once and for all in their 5-part official statement.

Official Statement:

1. First off, we apologize for being late to grasp the situation on the connection interruption which Oh My Girl and all the staff experienced.

2. On December 9, Oh My Girl traveled to the United States for their album jacket photoshoot. And we had already told the interested parties that while we were in the U.S., Oh My Girl would open for the L.A. event 'Unforgettable 2015' which both celebrities and producers were attending.

We were thankful that this would be an opportunity for rookie girl group Oh My Girl to meet representatives, and we decided to take part in promotions. Since the event was not our own solo performance, there was no need to receive a performance visa.

3. After this, Oh My Girl and the staff had no problem with the procedures at the [Los Angeles] airport immigration office and passed through, but a problem arose while at customs.

The person in charge of customs asked Oh My Girl and the staff what relationship they had with each other, and one of the staff used the word 'sister' and a misunderstanding occurred. They thought it was strange that we were not blood related, but said that we were 'sisters'. And so they took extra attention to the large quantity of items and outfits we had. And since the members are young girls, they were mistaken as 'working women' (prostitutes) which the U.S. has a big issue with right now.

4. After the misunderstanding was resolved, we were sent back to the airport immigration office, and had communication with the airport staff, and our opinion was not straightened out. And in the previous step, our phones were seized and it was an extreme situation where we could not contact anyone outside. The company was detained for a long period of 15 hours, and we decided to go back to Korea because of the members who were tired physically and emotionally.

5. A lawyer in the U.S. is taking the effort to make sure the unjust treatment of being detained is valid or not. We sincerely apologize for causing anxiety and thank everyone who worried for us.

K-pop group was turned away at LAX for lying about reason for visiting U.S., official says

The K-pop group that was turned away at LAX this week was denied entry because the members lied about the purpose of their trip, not because they were mistaken for sex workers as the performers have claimed, a government official said Saturday.

An official with the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, who asked that his name not be used because he was not authorized to discuss the matter, said the eight-member girl band lied to customs officials and said they were traveling to the U.S. as tourists, rather than for work.

Officials denied them entry when it became clear from the contents of their luggage that they were here to perform but did not have the required P1 performance visa.

The group was attempting to enter the U.S. under the visa waiver program, which allows South Korean travelers into the country for up to 90 days without a visa.

"We were doing what we do every day," the official said. "We send people back all the time."

The South Korean management company of the band Oh My Girl said in a statement this week that the group had been turned away because they were mistaken for "working women." The company, WM Entertainment, claimed they "did not need a performance visa" because they were participating in a promotional event rather than holding a solo concert.

The customs official also disputed that the band and accompanying staff members were "detained" for more than 15 hours at the airport. The group was put on the first flight back to Korea operated by the same airline they arrived on, as is the policy, which was 15 hours later, the official said.

The entertainment company had said in its statement that it was consulting attorneys in the United States about the group's lengthy detention.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

I think a clue lies in the use of the word "sister " . I wonder if this was said in Korean, and a CO with limited knowledge of Korean misinterpreted it.
