The example forms found here on VJ(link in menu at top of site) can be very helpful to go along with the guide. I-765 > http://www.visajourney.com/examples/INS-Form-I-765.pdf

You will need to wait until you receive the EAD before applying for the SSN.

Why can't they get their SSN? Their i-94 isn't expired yet. Wouldn't they just need to go to their local ssa office?

Because their I-94 is only valid for a short period of time (less than 2 weeks), which is not enough time to process an SSN.

You should have at least 2 weeks remaining or more on your I-94 if you want to apply for an SSN before getting your EAD.

Just fill it out. You're not supposed to fill out dates and stuff anyway but trust me: you want to apply for travel authorization. Even if you think you won't need it, you have no idea if an emergency or similar comes up and you suddenly need it.

No reason is ever needed when filing the I-131 with your AOS. You leave those parts blank. For dates of travel and intended length of trip, you can simply write UNKNOWN.

Follow the example form.

He can go ahead and apply for an SSN, however, the SSN will only be given if he has a reason why he needs his SSN. Basically, unless you have work authorization, you have to give a reason why you need an SSN now. By the way, they are kinda picky about giving you an SSN without work authorization.

Go there ^^. It explains it a little more.

I don't know how they do it but at least for me they never even looked at the I-94 though I am not sure if they can just look it up in their computer. We went there directly after marriage and before filling for AOS and it was not an issue. She only looked at the marriage certificate and my passport though only thing I did was doing a name change. Getting your first one might be a different story.
