EAD card mailed on 10/26 so hopefully will receive it soon. What is the length of time I should wait before calling to check the status on the I-485? Knock on wood I haven't received an RFE so I'm hoping that's a good sign, but status hasn't changed since saying my fingerprint fee was received. I realize once it changes to ready to schedule interview it's still a long wait, but just wondered the time frame before I'm able to call and check the status of it.

This is something I'm wondering too. But I also know that there are people that don't get the interview for months after they receive their EAD, so I don't want to chase up needlessly when there's a process in place. The only thing that does make me want to chase up on it though is the fact we've already seen a few 'scheduled for interview' notices come through for August filers and one even has an interview in place. Every time I complain about not seeing a notice though, I usually end up getting an email before I call up!

I went to the SS Office in Walnut Creek yesterday. I wish my husband had let me know that you can book time slots because we got there for when it opened and waited from 9am until 11:30 to be seen. The whole process was truly awful. When I finally did get called up, I had to go to the front door to meet this absolutely vile woman who had a face like thunder. I didn't want to judge on first impressions, but as we sat down in the back office, she curtly asked me for my passport, work authorisation and my form, all without even batting an eyelid toward me. I gave her my passport and work authorisation and said I hadn't filled out a form as I hadn't been asked to. She gave me the dirtiest look and said that she had, "just announced it over the speaker". Now, I was listening to all the announcements (and I even asked my husband to clarify after the fact) and what she said did not include those applying for a brand new SSN. I was livid that she was blaming me for her inability to list the correct uses for the form, but held my tongue enough to only say that I didn't recall it in her message. She huffily got up from her chair, practically shoved the form into my hands, and told me to fill it out and wait for my number to be called. I went back out into the waiting room, clearly disheveled, and my husband asked what was wrong. I said that I'd just encountered the rudest woman I've ever had the misfortune to meet. I started filling out the form (something that honestly could be saved for them to fill in as they ask you these questions anyway), and my number was called to go to a window. I then was graced with a lovely man named Jun who very daringly told me that I didn't have to fill out the rest of the form and that he would fill in the blanks. About 10 minutes later I was leaving having felt annoyed yet accomplished. If I'd just caught that woman's name though, I'd be making a formal complaint. I even saw her, while I was relaying information to Jun, push in front of a colleague to use the photocopier that her colleague was already using. She's a downright bully and lets down that entire branch.

But, enough of my venting, I just hope that no one else has the same experience. So all I can say to those applying for their SSN in the coming weeks is to book ahead and also to fill out the form before your number is called.

That is so terrible that there are people like that working in government positions that treat people so rude. If they don't like their job, they should quit and find another one. They are supposed to be helping people, not making it harder for them. Did you wait to apply for a SSN until after you received your work authorization? My husband went and got his SSN using his I-94 once he got to the states and before we ever sent off the AOS packets. Should he have waited or does it matter when you go and get it?

I know, I just don't get it myself! It was almost as if she was frustrated with those from outside the country getting a SSN, because she seemed almost tolerable to those from within the country.

I waited to apply after I got my work authorisation. For starters I didn't know I was going to be marrying and staying in the country, but even then I didn't like the fact I'd be applying in my maiden name and having to go back just to change it to my married name. Grateful for that even more so now, after such an awful experience there! It doesn't matter when you get it though.

I've faxed them three times evidence for my EAD in hope of spurring something on and still nothing so seems like it doesn't work for the fax system of keeping hassling them! Meant to start work in a week and half so kinda frustrated. Wonder if there is such a thing as over-faxing USCIS? Would be fine if they could just tell me they received it but they can't even do that, agghhhhhh

Just seen the case status website has gone down too as can't log in.

Sorry to here the rubbish with the SSN. I got my SSN as soon as I arrived and did not have that experience, a front door person got me the right form and number and I was seen and done in 20 minutes, shame some people spoil the whole experience of what is meant to be a happy life change process! Hopefully you get your card soon, I got my SSN number the next day by going back to the office, the card arrived a week later.

I've had that happen to me twice! USCIS do monitor the forums but I don't think that has anything to do with case updates, more than likely mere coincidence.

Just waiting on my SSN now. I'm in this weird point in my life where I've had to start again at the age of 28 after having had such a well paying and respected job but also wanting to start a family. So I've decided to take my expertise and put together my own business. I just need to look into what I need to register for, and start making a plan of it! This also gives me that bit more flexibility to visit family too, as it seems the US holiday/vacation policies aren't as generous as those from the UK. My mother is upset enough that I'm going to be permanently residing here, let alone that I wouldn't be able to visit all too often for lack of time off.

Same here! I am going to have to start from the bottom.. I had good job back in Canada, well-paid, great benefits...

Yeah I'm worried about vacation time as well as future maternity leave (or lack thereof). It's gotten to the point where I've told my husband that I seriously consider being a stay-at-home mom for pretty much as long as the maternity leave would have been if we had lived in Sweden.

Yup, I'm 31 and in the same position. I was looking at my own company but with indemnity insurance and getting a company set-up looks such a pain, so you definitely have more guts than me!
