If I apply for a job, will companies require my passport for identification?

I am planning on renewing my passport and have it changed to my married name. I will opt to have it delivered to me which will take around 6-8 weeks.

At the same time, I will also start applying for jobs since I now have my EAD. I'm just wondering if let's say I do get an interview soon, will companies require a copy of my passport? Is there some document I can show them that my passport is with the embassy?

Thanks everyone!

EAD card and SS card usually is what companies need. Passport is not needed but can be used as an ID when asked.

This is good to know! I have EAD and SSN. I will also take my driving test soon so in the absence of passport, I can show them my driver's license.

Thank you Greenbaum! You're always so helpful.

They cannot specify which documents you use as long as they are among those listed on form I-9. An EAD card (with picture) or green card are both sufficient on their own to verify your identity and establish work authorization. Most larger employers, particularly those that employ foreigners, will know this and abide by the law. Occasionally you will see posts here from people describing employers that don't abide by the law, and it's unfortunately difficult to fight if they do this, but the I-9 instructions lay out what is required very clearly.

No, GC and SS Card (and sometimes EAD) only.

She does not have a green card that is why she is asking about her EAD which is the authorization that she can work pending her GC. As mentioned, the I-9 has the other required or substitute ID's that can be used. More than one is required. The list allows her to pick and chose which ID she has and is willing to use. SS is always needed since employment taxes are a requirement. See attach File for ID's:

Yes, you need an SSN, but the EAD is sufficient to establish work authorization and identity. You do not need to show your social security card if you have an EAD card with your photo on it.

We're splitting hairs here. Good night.

Sorry didnt notice that part. Im basing my answer on my own experience. The companies I applied at didnt accept the EAD, they wanted a GC. I wasnt aware that this is a violation of I-9 but as an applicant, I dont think arguing with them will be helpful. I waited for my GC to arrive before I re-applied.

Sorry didnt notice that part. My reply was based on my own experience where EAD wasnt accepted. I reapplied once I received my GC. I didnt know back then that it was a violation not to accept EAD but who I was to argue (maybe I should have but as an applicant I felt twas ok to wait for my GC rather than question them).

Thank you aurpol! My AOS is still pending so I don't have my GC yet. Hoping to get an interview soon!

Sorry i missed that part. I guess the other commenter was right. I based my answer on my own experience (maybe the HR wasnt aware of EAD or I just did not insist).

Nope. Passport isn't what they want to see. Employers want to see the EAD or green card, then your SS number.

In reality an employer needs to see the SS card, many don't ask for it, they just ask for the number as you need an SSN to work (except those illegally in the USA ;) ). An SS card is useless for ID

ya, that i-9 form is important. yet another if-then-else construct, so study study study !

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
