thanks so much guys and i mean he has the medical care thats provided by the company hes working for why i dont think he can add me so it just covers him but when i find out if i am i might do the social services thing sounds promising and no i dont have a SSN yet i haven't received my authorization for work yet, im still waiting for it to update since i had an RFE for a cert.

Insurance is insurance. OP needs to clarify what is meant by 'government health insurance'. Does he work for the government and has insurance offered federally? Or does he have ''Obamacare''? Either case he could add you to his plan, or you could purchase insurance through Obamacare. Since you are in MD, you'd need to go through the state exchange.

My husband was able to add me to his US health insurance right after we were married in the UK and before I moved to the USA. I didn't have an SSN (or even my visa, yet!). Big company, so I guess they deal with that sort of thing all the time.

I was added immediately after we were married with no SSN yet. You have to ask your husband what his plan is. Generally, companies will pay a portion (lucky if you get it 100% covered) for the employee and they'll have to pay a premium every month to have someone added (you and your child) etc.

I would HIGHLY ask him to look into it and if you've passed the enrollment, ask when they have open enrollments. I know it's different for every company.

I am a Canadian that moved to the US and insurance was always a top priority for me since I am used to being insured well in Canada. I really do hope that this gets sorted for you as it's stressful and can get expensive in the US.

Whoever told him that was wrong. There is no ssn needed to be added to a spouses health insurance. Some people simply don't understand or care to know the laws.

I added my wife to my insurance two days after we were married with no ssn.

I was added to my husbands insurance "immediately" after we were married too. (They needed our marriage certificate which took us over 2 weeks to get). I did have an SSN though, but I don't remember them asking for it. His work had a 30 day deadline and had we applied 31 days after we got married they wouldn't've added me to his plan and we would have had to wait until his insurance was renewed - which I have no idea when that is.

Have your husband add you to his health insurance. I added my husband to my health insurance before we got married - they just asked i provide them with a wedding date, He didn't have a social security number at the time. I also got pregnant during the immigration process (only difference - Im the US citizen and he's the beneficiary)

I did the same. I work for the government as well, and added my husband to my health insurance before he arrived in the states. First I went through our HR department, and they didn't have a clue, so I called the insurance directly (BCBS). I made it clear to them he was not in the states yet, but it didn't seem to matter as long as they had our wedding date and his birth date, he was added. They did not ask me for any documentation.

I think what also made it easy was that I had Family coverage already, so that could make a difference as well.

Not sure if your husband went through the HR dept, but that's usually where the problem lies. Most HR depts haven't a clue. Unfortunately he may need to go to a mngr. or even directly to the health insurance co himself, but you definitely don't need the ssn. Good luck!

if you are the one in England, you are covered by your government insurance. If you are in US, then you would have to apply for help if not working but if youn don't work, how do you plan to get him here? would be helpful to know who is where. Man in US and woman in England or other way around

I've been insured 7 years, 5 in the USA... They still won't get my SSN. They asked last winter to report I was covered to (the irs?) and I replied quoting the articles/regulation that name and DOB were sufficient.
