Name Change from Foreign Country Passport Error

I hope I'm posting in the right place.

My fiance will be entering the US soon on K1 so we of course will be following all the steps for afterwards(SS,AOS, etc.). This is my question and the situation:

The foreign country (Libya) made a name error on his new passport. They put one of his surnames as part of his given names, and they also omitted one letter on his middle name. The embassy was kind enough to include the missing letter in his middle name on the actual K1 visa.

I want to know if, after we get married, can we return to the SS office and he can change his name to how it should be? So that all of his PR card info will be correct and his name correct for everything here in the US? If not done this way how should one go about fixing the error?

Also as background info, it is not possible for it to be corrected in Libya at this time. Plus the passport already has his K1 in it.

The best thing for you to do is call or go to your local SS office and ask.

More than likely if you apply for a SSN using the I94, you will need to do it with the name on the I94, correct or not. After you get your EAD/AP/GC with the proper name, you should have no issue changing the name on the SSC. This is similar to what many women need to do when they decide to change their surname although the SSA is supposed to accept a marriage license as a legal name change document. The big issue will be if and when you decide to travel overseas, you may have issues if your husband uses his Lybian passport for identification. Regardless.
