Is this enough evidence?

I'm planning to send my I-175 later this month. We have no children together and no plans to have any.

So far as evidence I have

Joint Tax returns from last 2 years,

Copies of the joint apartment lease for last 2 years

Front/back of our credit cards (same acct and number, but in each of our names,)

Joint bank account info, bank statements for our joint account for several different months of the last 2 years, Health insurance information (last year I was on his, this year he is on mine,)

Copies of utility bills in both our names,

Copies of drives license (shows name change to his surname)

Copy of recent purchase of a new vehicle in both our names

Various pictures taken in the last 2 years - should I also include the same pictures I sent in my initial visa application that showed visits, etc?

Signed letters from friends - how important is it that they are notarized?

Is this enough or do I need more?

Overall, your list looks good. This is my two cents on a couple of items.

  • Unless the copies of the drivers licenses show the same address, skip it. Name change is a personal choice that doesn't affect the process one way or the other.
  • Signed letters from friends carry little to zero weight in the overall evaluation of a file. If you wish to include them, they don't need to be notarized.

While letters of support carry very little weight, they MUST be notarized. Otherwise, they are just statements and not affidavits (sworn/notarized statements). I would exclude them altogether but if you want to include them, the instructions state they must be notarized.

Good luck! :)

Let's not get into this argument again.

Page 3 of 7 of the instructions clearly state affidavits under point #5 of the "Evidence of the Relationship". Please take a look.

I did look, if notarization of such statements was required, the instructions would specifically state that step was needed.

Thousands of people have submitted such statements over the years that were not notarized and it did not present them with any issues.

All notarization does in this particular instance is the person signing the paper was in fact the person signing the paper through a check of ID.

But it does state that it should be notarized. By definition, an affidavit is "a written statement of facts, sworn to and signed by a deponent before a notary public or some other authority having the power to witness an oath.”

It does not state "signed letters". Many application substitute signed letters instead of affidavits in error. We all agree that it is weak evidence which have very little value in light of stronger evidence and USCIS is not going to waste time asking you to resubmit weak pieces of evidence if you have stronger ones but it clearly says affidavits. So, the answer is, yes, letters should be notarized.

But my point to the OP is that you don't even need to include them since you have strong evidence anyway. Good luck OP!

  • 2 weeks later...

Is this enough or do I need more?

include the entire tax return. ALL pages..even if it is 2 inch thick for each year. Get tax transcripts from irs.gov website. its free and takes 5 mins to down load. if you have a total of three years returns, include them as well. including the most current ones-2014.

As others have said, the letters are secondary evidence and hold no real weight.

What about life insurance with you listed as beneficiary?

What about any investments with you listed as beneficiary?

Good luck!
